Actually, I don't think I've ever said this but Shitty Services played a big part in me not an heroing myself after my wreck and later amputation. It gave me a sense of purpose and seeing other people use it and enjoy it gave me a reason to keep going and gave me a sense of meaning in life (hard to describe). In the early days, when I wasn't cleared to work and was living off of disability, witch was barely enough to pay for rent and utilities, I would often pay for hosting our of my food budget. It was the only budget I really had free to work with and despite how frugal I was, I couldn't always make ends meet. During that time I skipped hundreds of meals and went to bed hungry many times. Never once ebegged or let people in on the situation because I didn't want people to feel obligated to donate. Now, I'm back working (part time) and am in a mildly better position so I feel comfortable taking about it since it's unlikely to happen again.

Twitter is very unlike Fedi, there is a sewer of an environment which was carefully created to keep you in long pointless arguments, for the company to make money, and the result is that most people who are on Twitter are highly unlikable. There is a real push by the company to engineer a personality type for the users, which is hardly a moral decision considering what qualities they are pushing and making more important. While clients for Pleroma and Mastodon, and the server software itself were created to resemble Twitter in features and in look, there are no algorithms pushing things which will upset us and there is room to express ourselves. The nicer people will leave Twitter, as they have little to do there, or are tired of the toxic atmosphere. And although the meanest people will leave as well they will be outnumbered, as Twitter still gives an environment for people who wish to make others feel bad. That's what I think, at least.

I only have a 2GB machine and it is consistently using swap. I am excited to see if any of the other matrix implementations become usable. (a.k.a. once encryption is supported pretty much.) Synapse is such a pain to setup, and it is very resource heavy. (I only have like 35 users, 10 of which are active)
