One requirement I've set for leaving fedbook (and possibly birdsite) is that I have my own website, as well as an email server which my family can use (which also included coming up with a domain my definitely-not-anarchist family would actually use)I'm also considering a mastodon/pleroma instance and diaspora pod, but I honestly don't think I'd convince any of them to actively use it.

There will definitely be a nextcloud.Also considering another domain to have a more anarchism-based blog and instances of Nitter, SearX, and the like.

A non-federated Matrix server is another possibility I'm considering.The issue becomes being able to afford hosting for this kind of stuff. One of the only VPS providers that I liked in terms of bandwidth and storage blocks SMTP ports unless you give them a "valid reason" to need one. They haven't defined what "valid reason" means, and were vague in their response when I asked about whether setting up a personal mailserver for family was "valid" enough for them.

@TheNerdyAnarchist I can't say for sure since I don't run a mail server but as far as I know nothing is blocked. There support is quick to answer I'm sure they would tell you

@TheNerdyAnarchist They don't offer anything themselves. They have some 3rd party affiliate program but i would have to sign up for it and it's just not something i'm interested in doing. But thanks for the thought.
