@potato @DrRyanSkelton what’s the point? Android is open source and you can build it yourself with no google shitware. i already do this with LineageOS on a Nexus 5X

@DrRyanSkelton @AngryHortlerNoises Execpt every piece of hardware in your phone needs a proprietary driver blob stuck on an ancient kernel.

@potato @DrRyanSkelton propriety or closed source, or both? there’s a difference. running an old kernel doesn’t matter. it’s a phone.

@AngryHortlerNoises @DrRyanSkelton Most of the hardware works with open source drivers. The modem and wifi have firmware blobs but the actual kernel driver is open source. (There isn't a single modem that's completely open source.) The modem is connected over USB internally as well so it doesn't have direct memory access. There are kill switches for various components. Being on an old decrepit kernel is insecure.

@DrRyanSkelton @AngryHortlerNoises @MischievousTomato Most of the phones supported by LineageOS are out of support. Only the newer ones are getting security updates.

@potato @DrRyanSkelton old kernels get security patches. hell, i run 4.19 on my desktop and it gets regular updates. my phone runs Android 10 with security patches from a couple months ago when i last installed them. old does not mean insecure.

@potato @DrRyanSkelton then it’s time to just cough up $50 for a used phone that’s running a newer kernel if your threat assessment requires it. most people don’t care. most of the “hacking” people suffer these days is through social engineering, not through purely technical exploits.

@AngryHortlerNoises @potato @DrRyanSkelton How are any Nexus 5Xs still running?? I never witnessed one that survived the bootloop of death.

@AngryHortlerNoises @DrRyanSkelton Also those are Android security patches. Not kernel security patches. Ask the LOS devs. They'll tell you the same thing.

@potato @DrRyanSkelton barring unusual circumstances the Linux patches have no impact on kernel space compatibility (namely drivers) like major version upgrades do. it’s why the patches are released for the old stable kernels. i do my own LineageOS builds

@elephantcakewalk @DrRyanSkelton @potato mine uses a custom kernel that disables the two fast cores, so the heat problem is fixed. the four little cores are fast enough for emails, calls texts, music, etc. i don’t do anything special with my phone
