2/So for those of you who have been following me since the beginning, you'll remember that every year or so, I'll make a plea to you guys to not take your prescriptions to the evil big chain pharmacies like CVS. This is not just because they are my competitor as an independent pharmacist, it is also for your own safety. I came across an article recently that brilliantly articulates their shitty practices.https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-care/overworked-understaffed-pharmacists-say-industry-crisis-puts-patient-safety-risk-n1261151?fbclid=IwAR21g2IObufu5dMhedj1HSFT4AcbiVdlIQ3LtdLtH2r4do7NO4VL-dwL2uE

3/The chain pharmacies have changed their primary goal to metrics rather than patient care. The point is to get a higher prescription count than their competitors. As a result, they have sacrificed patient safety protocols. Making sure you get the right info and the proper amount of counseling is one of the lowest priorities on their list. They also understaff and overwork their employees to accomplish these goals. These metrics also go for vaccinations, testing, and other special services

4/the DROP has never worked at a chain pharmacy. And that is by choice. I wouldn't do it unless there was absolutely no other choice. BUT I do have many friends that have worked at these type of places and I've heard nothing but horror stories. I will share some with you after I am finished highlighting the points in the article

21/ the policy of metrics should be abolished and never used anywhere in the pharmacy world. But until then, I would recommend NOT going to any of the chain retail pharmacies. You don't want to fall victim to an exhausted pharmacist on the 13th hour of their shift that hasn't eaten or peed all day potentially missing a drug interaction and leaving you with some horrific problems. boycott these evil motherfuckers and take it to your local mom and pop pharmacy.END/

@watch4thedrop Drop, good to hear from you againThe same metrics & overworking staff is true in nursing. OR’s are how fast can you turn the room over to get the next patient in, hospital floor nurses have 10-15 patients & lots of hospitals got rid of nurse aids who help with bathing, toileting, food. If you are on a low risk floor you will only see your nurse once for meds. In my clinic when I retired they didn’t replace me. All 3 of us were busy, now the two left are stressed Young RN leave!

@watch4thedrop We're lucky to be able to use the local mom and pop pharmacy in town instead of the big retail chain pharmacies.I haven't picked up any prescriptions at CVS for years and I'm glad. The service at the independent pharmacy is much better and it seems like a more professional operation too, with a much less stressful environment overall.Prescription drug safety is much too important to blindly trust these chain pharmacies that care only about the financial bottom line.

@watch4thedrop 1) Ah ha! That just turned my irritation into compassion! My partner picked up an antibiotic prescription for me yesterday at CVS. He brought it home… it was the right prescription, the bottle had the right doctors name, but the name was for a woman who’s initials were also A.Z., who lives in California… this happened here in Indiana. When I called before the rx was picked up to ask if I could prepay before it was picked up… the pharmacist snapped at me….

@watch4thedrop hey next time you take a holiday from SQV give us a warning and not some scary message. We were really concerned about you. For now on I guess you will have to give someone here a phone number so we can call out the posse. How's that for family?

@watch4thedrop Good to hear from you Drop and I hope the clouds are beginning to lift for you πŸ™Thank you for this informative thread unfortunately our only locally owned pharmacy in Gloucester County closed this year and I've moved my prescriptions to Walmart. I've often wondered about the harried work environment there because it has so many working in the pharmacy alone! Not many smiles either. Now I want to ask the pharmacist if he gets a lunch break!

@watch4thedrop Thank you very much for this thread. This actually represents what some parts of Israeli medicine has become. After studying for 7 years, the new doctors make shifts of 26 HOURS each, with no breaks. The family doctors in HMOs are required to take patients at a rate of about 7mins per patient. This is related to this:https://social.quodverum.com/web/statuses/106405871186817679And if someone complains, they are told that they can always go to private health care, and pay a lot. This is not good...

@JennyL @adimeatatime @watch4thedrop I have my prescriptions filled quarterly at a CVS I have been going to for 20 years.Noticed last visit that they had instituted a closed for lunch policy at 1330-1400.They always seem helpful, pharmacists have been there a long time.Son gets his stuff from Walgreens been using ~10 yrNo hard lunch except for the overnight guyThe real QUESTION?Why are we taking so many drugs?

@EarlThePearls That is a good question. I don’t have any prescriptions right now that I use every day. My husband has one. I got my flu shot there every fall.I’m sad that a pharmacy that’s been in our community since the 60’s is permanently closed. There was a time when there were no other choices here. They would go in after hours if someone called them needing something after closing time. I will miss @JennyL @watch4thedrop

@Cdubois @JennyL @adimeatatime @watch4thedrop I assume it is more on environment. In my last career we had some dealerships closed on Sunday and it always chapped me BUT is was TX and some laws and the company had no choice at those locations.

@adimeatatime the supermarket pharmacies follow the same metrics mostly but they are better than wags/cvs. if no mom and pop pharm near you, then those would be the next best choice.

@Cdubois @inverness01 @JennyL @adimeatatime I would imagine the metrics of a small town of a couple dozen people would be lower than the ones for a big city. some of these places fill 1000 scripts a day. Also I would say that whether or not there is a lunch break is not the issue. The issue is the pharmacists feel if they take the lunch break or any break, they will miss their numbers and get tossed during the next review so they choose to skip it to save their jobs. It's a tough situation.

@Rooibos The family feel is always nice. Kinda like the difference between SQV and twitter. Plus, a pharmacist that knows your name and speaks to you often will likely have a lot of your meds memorized by heart. I know I do for my best patients. I can spot potential drug interactions with new meds their doc prescribes without even going to their profile

@watch4thedrop I heard a doctor the other day direct a patient to the local pharmacy after they complained about CVS. He really gave them a glowing review too. Anyway, it made me think of you and I've been wanting to share that. 😁 πŸ‘ We get our meds where we grocery shop which, not a fan, but I really like the pharmacist there. She seems to be on top of her game. I've only just recently needed prescription meds for the first time (also not a fan) πŸ˜‚ 😁 My husband takes sulfasalazine for UC.

@watch4thedrop well, CVS tends to be the most expensive with Good RX too. Like, their prices are yuppy. Walgreens too. I had to switch from CVS which was delivering my methotrexate which I liked because, well, people and COVID (in that order) πŸ˜‚ . But now I'm taking HCQ and our insurance won't pay and they want almost a hundred bucks. For HCQ they can bite me! And Good RX for CVS was the worst. Incidentally, our store pharmacy was the best price. So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! 😁

@watch4thedrop HCQ is twenty bucks with Good RX. But, I have to add that something happened to our prescription coverage. My husband used to pay zero copay for his and now he has to use Good RX too. I called them and they said there's a prescription deductible now or something. We have no idea.

@Klang that's ridiculous. generic copays should at most be 15 bucks but usually zero.

@watch4thedrop yeah. His sulfasalazine they wanted him to pay twenty bucks. So, something has gone on with our insurance. But he doesn't care. He's going to use Good RX too rather than hassle with the insurance. I hate insurance and dealing with them too! πŸ˜‚
