@icedquinn@blob.cat I mean, I think that's why hyperthreading is a good thing, the OS and CPU and pretend to have double the cores while it's only just scheduling idle cycles to do something elsein theory you could have as many logical cores as you wanted but reduced returns and w/eI don't remember when AMD started supporting "hyper threading" as that's more of an intel thing iirc. my ryzen laptop has 4c/8t

@icedquinn@blob.cat also using windows 11, microsoft updated the scheduler to better support multi-threading, so the OS itself is being more proactive, because of the new intel chips with multiple size cores that are meant to save battery while a few main cores do the thing you care about think Nvidia Optimus but it's built into the CPU

@jessica @icedquinn the idea behind hyperthreading is also to execute something while e.g. data is beeing loaded from ram... hyperthreading is built in hardware so unlimited virtual cores are impossible and would not have the same effect like hyperthreading. But modern programming languages have the possibility to do something like that like Go, it has an internal scheduler for executing tasks.

@jessica @icedquinn well, the efficiency of hyperthreading is, let's say, 30 percent on average. For example, take a look on this test:https://www.aeco.space/en/blog/no-hyper-threading-vs-hyper-threadingThe explanation behind this is a little complicated. Usually many things happen when something is executed on a cpu. To make it more efficient, they pretty much doubled everything before something is executed. So as soon as the CPU knows it has to wait for something on one core, it switches to the alternative execution pipeline and tries to execute this. This is built in Hardware not Software.Based on the knowledge of this one can assume that for example a third pipeline would be way less efficient then the other two. It would probably be less then 30% of 30% which is why it is not worth building a third pipeline in hardware. And the way how Operating Systems works is that they have their own execution context per CPU core / per Thread. Here come the advantage of new programming languages which have an abstraction layer between Tasks which are executed and the Threading System which is controlled by the Operating System. This leads to better efficiency because the operating system needs additional time for organizational things for each thread. On this level of abstraction you can have parallel virtual Tasks and its the most efficient way to execute more things parallel than you have virtual cores at the moment. But even there, of course, you overhead exists, so one should be careful with it

@jessica @icedquinn I don't know if you are able to do this, but it may be worthwhile to upgrade the laptop with more RAM. RAM is usually not that expensive and if that is the limitation, it is a cheap way to have a faster system. But if you decide to do that, assuming you can and the laptop allows it, then the temperature could increase further as the processor can suddenly process a lot more without waiting for things to load/happen.

@icedquinn you'd think by now computers could do teamwork *without* needing to be specially coded to support that stuff. The only thing that I do that uses *all* my cores properly is my video encoder

@icedquinn gnu parallel can help, like, if you want to convert all wav files in the current directory to mp3 with lame encoder, concurrently using all of the cores, you can doparallel lame {} -o {.}.mp3 ::: *.wav

@icedquinn though i don't do that often because i don't like to disturb the chilling cores :)

@icedquinn@blob.cat windows 11 is better at allocating cores but it's still dependent on the apps themselves supporting multi cores to actually take advantage of more cores

@icedquinn wouldn't it be based if they software locked the extra cores and let you rent them out when you need to use them to reduce carbon emissions

@icedquinn And this is why an old Xeon E5 v3 w/ Turbo Boost Unlock is still plenty.
