Their website has a lot of information on FGM as it is practiced in many countries. I encourage everyone to read up on it and donate if you can. This is one of the most overt and violent expressions of misogyny globally, done to girls as young as 5, to keep them "pure" for their future husbands. In one method, the inner labia and clitoris are completely cut off with shears, and the labia majora are sewn shut, with a small opening for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. The legs of the child are bound together to encourage formation of a scar and the fusion of the labia majora, leaving the girl incapacitated for weeks. When the girl is married (often also as a child or young teenager, if she survives the practice), the scar is either forced open by penetration, cut open by the man with a knife, or, if he happens to have a modicum of sympathy, it is cut open by a doctor in a hospital. No matter what, the result is a second bout of excruciating pain.I am by no means an expert on this topic, but since reading more and more women's testimonies and descriptions of the practice, it is one of my biggest concerns as a feminist. @BCLADY I know that of course having the language to describe sex-based oppression is crucial, and there have been transactivists that have attacked and attempted to suppress the work of anti-FGM activists, and we must acknowledge these as a backlash to the feminist movement, but I think it's a reach and a bit disrespectful to compare gender ideology to the practice of FGM. They are not intrinsically linked, FGM predates transsexualism by millennia, it's an age-old practice of misogyny. Likewise, while SRS is a horrific practice that should be abolished, I simply do not think it is comparable to a procedure where a girl is held down to have her genitals cut off or burnt with acid against her will, with no anaesthetic, so that she will remain a virgin bride for a potential husband that will likely be at least a decade older than her, only to have the scar ripped or cut open later so she can be raped. SRS can't be the Western version of FGM when FGM literally *is* practiced in the West. These are separate issues with separate causes and consequences, linked only by the vast umbrella of misogyny. I am not trying to attack you or anything, just saying that although it can be tempting to think all roads lead to trans, because it's so prevalent in Western media and increasingly in law, misogyny is the oldest form of oppression, and there are issues like this that deserve our head-on attention without derailing into issues more familiar to us.That out of the way, I do love Hibo Wardere's social media presence, but I had no idea she had a book, so thank you for the recommendation. I am currently reading Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, another FGM survivor and activist, which is a horrifying autobiography of her life in Muslim Somalia, and her escape from an arranged marriage. I highly recommend this book.
