@okpierreI think it depends on if people need to take a break. It also depends on the contacts you make on here. Some are your friends, some as also your professional peers etc. I'm on Mastodon more now than when I started. It was a mixture of finding the right instance and finding the right folks that it makes sense for me to follow. Any thriving network needs community and we are a bunch of micro communities. It takes time.

@okpierre No community ever stays unchanging, nor should it. What you know will disappear, but new things will come to replace it. A new article about how Mastodon is dying is published every year or so, and it is just as wrong each time. From where I'm standing, the Fedi is as lively as ever. Hell, there's people joining our instance pretty regularly! Mostly because I'm inviting/forcing them to; I've gotten pretty good at it.But of course you would not get the same experience from mastodon.social, which has due to poor moderation of racism been blocked by many of the cooler instances out there. Switch to a better instance; trust me, it's worth it!

@okpierre I know some won't agree, but I think the Fedi needs more monetization. I'm not talking VC funding or anything, but just creative ways for projects to monetize so that they can be sustained. So that developers and maintainers can develop expertise in the technology, and do this as more than a hobby. I mean nothing wrong with people contributing as a hobby. But being able to dedicate more time would allow more great things to be created in the Fediverse.
