@fiddle @s8n @wzqtparor well, recently devs rom a russian security consultant company discovered a very kike instruction on intel chips that allow to modify microcode in the red unlock state (Management Eengine disabled), after that the jews at the US dept of security put the company on a black list and accused them of being a front for the russian military intelligence.my theory is that schlomo rosenberg panicked that half of the jew backdoor was discovered, so he ordered the pajeets at m$ to make the newest and jewest backdoor a hard requirement for the next m$ windows, and that’s why windows 11 has a hard requirement of TPM 2.0, otherwise the mossad can’t cuck you with complete jewpunity.

@fiddle @s8n @wzqtparor it is easy, the only ones who benefit from planned obsolence are the jews who can now force normies to buy new intel chips which are very jewish, as they offer worse performance than amd while routing more of your data to mossad servers through the management engine.

@BlinkRape @fiddle @s8n @wzqtparor i’m sure amd chips have at least the NSA backdoor, but knowing the chinese don’t like the jews so much it is likely that instead of the mossad backdoor amd chips have the xi jin ping backdoor, where all image of winnie the poo yo ever view is reported straight to xi jin and your social credit score lowered.

@sapphire @Terra_australis @creamqueen @wzqtparor Base system is foss? since when? Also if you need a citation for fed backdoors you're actually retarded, it's self evident but if you want a source then go to wikileaks, go to the NSA leak and boom, all the proof but if that is too much effort than just look up "PRISM surveillance program"And versatility with hardware is an argument, Debian have disk images for just about any CPU architecture and a fuckton of drivers for hardware in generalAnd freedom from the government, large business, arbitrary restrictions, etcand the "gOtTa TwEaK fOr 8 hOuRs" not an argument

@sapphire The things do not do anything you tell them, nor anything the protocol tells them. Have they fixed the stupid DHCP lease problem yet? Do you still have to install some kind of absurd "shareware" to make it recognize a USB gamepad?> so that's my only aversion goneI imagine if you get one to match the other appliances in your kitchen, or maybe if you wanna plaster it with stickers and try to seem interesting to a barista that is only smiling to get you to give her a dollar for that paragraph's worth of coffee you ordered, or you want to convince the VCs that you will shut up and get the KPIs, it's a pretty decent machine. I'm looking at one right now and I haven't managed to figure out anything else it could be used for. There was an improvement since the last time I was professionally obliged to touch one of these disasters: it seems that you no longer have to spend an hour clicking and then watching progress bars in order to get a C compiler onto the damn thing. (How is it Unix if it doesn't ship with a C compiler? Pretty sure that, as bloated as clang is, it still takes less space than their icon sheets.) It's still running this quaint, old-timey OS that is essentially single-user, doing things like littering .DS_Store files on every disk you let it touch. It seems to have developed some kind of terrible hipster disease if you open a vt100 emulator, it's decided that someone could want zsh (as if their previous choice of bash wasn't bad enough) and that a vt100 emulator is not just a good idea for interacting with the system using text, but that the main thing it was lacking was...emojis. Innovation truly never sleeps in Cupertino.I will say that it at least isn't Windows. While OSX just gives you some ridiculous hipster stack if you want to talk to the machine instead of pointing at things like a monkey, Windows gives you an entire horrid Ubuntu and has ads in the Start menu.

@sapphire > not really my problem, I do infra and sysadmin. "It's a great OS as long as you don't need to run anything on it." That's cheating, man, infra's easy-mode if nobody's computer does anything.Unless you mean that the issues are specific to writing code, in which case, I remember when you people were all Perl hackers at *least*. (The Apple fan in IT at the old workplace, dude would write Ruby scripts to send Bonjour notifications to the Mac users when OSX started shipping with Ruby.)My ancestors are smiling. Can you say the same, sapphire? :larrymad:> literally have not had a single problem with this in 10 years please enlighten me If it's an office, then maybe because the machines don't move around too much. OSX and iOS, in order to somehow improve user experience by fucking the network, will pretend DHCP leases never expire and are valid across networks and "who-has" is not even worth a single ARP. Usually you get lucky, sometimes you get unlucky, and you have to turn wifi on and off again until it gives up on the old lease, or remember (without using the network) how to force it to attempt to renew the lease. It appears to persist after reboots. Sometimes, if you're really lucky, the router makes the legitimate holder of that lease the unlucky one. If you've rolled godly luck, you'll be standing nearby and you can watch.I figure it can't still be doing that, but I've been surprised before.> 1. does all of the Linuxy things I need it to doWell, I mean, if you're just ssh'ing to a real machine or talking to OpenStack or whatever.> 2. supports all the Microshaft bullshit that corporate needs it toThis laptop runs Outlook and Slack. It is conventient that it keeps that shit off the actual computers.> 3. isn't bloaty as shitThis is relative, but if your bar is Windows or Branded Desktop Linux, sure.====Epilogue about Apple fan BOFH:One day, as was customary once a year, half the webshits and one of the sysadmins did no work and a lot of bandwidth-sensitive work ground to a halt while the pipes flooded with the WWDC stream. So I'm out smoking near the end of the day and e stumbled out to the smoking area from the sidewalk, bright pink. He didn't smoke but he could hardly stand up and didn't wanna go back to his desk, he was too drunk and was almost in tears. Half-way through the cigarette, after he vomited in the bushes, he started using coherent words. Apple had discontinued the Xserve with no warning or EOL or upgrade path or anything and this was the main item on his resume.

@p @sapphire you should call him up and tell him ruby is now considered legacy in the macos environment and watch him panic. I enjoy macos because of nostalgia myself. It doesn't provide anything the linux environments lack other than a modern next like interface and packaging. People who say linux doesn't work in 2021 worry me, I wonder what they would do in the oughts if ever asked to configure a machine, desktop linux in 2021 is beyond user friendly and acceptable. At the moment I tend to use my Mac machine just because its my newest fastest machine and the nostalgia high is still going.

@travis @sapphire > you should call him up and tell him ruby is now considered legacy in the macos environment and watch him panic. This was like 10 years ago. He actually ended up going to work at Apple.> desktop linux in 2021 is beyond user friendly and acceptable.Yes, they've proven that you can ruin anything by trying to make it appealing to people that wish they were using a different OS. It's a bigger mess every year. I blame Red Hat and Canonical. Did you know that they now make Maseratis that have automatic transmissions? The "desktop Linux" thing was always a mistake. The idea was to make a worse version of Windows, and they succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations. So now if you want a machine that doesn't second-guess you, something you can hack pretty easily, something built to be friendly to engineers, you have to go somewhere else.:ken: Luckily, there's somewhere to go. :9front:I've always thought it was weird that a programmer would decline to use a programming language to talk to the computer. If I want something to happen twice, or I want it to happen in a couple of hours, or I want it to only happen if my screen is unlocked, or I want it to happen on every machine in the network, the fact that they've caught up with Windows 95 isn't going to help. I want to tell the machine to do things in a convenient, expressive way, not humor it by arguing with a series of dialog boxes that don't do what I want. So they've shoved some icons on the screen and added Solitaire and now instead of telling the machine what you want, you get to find the button that tells the machine something, and for this privilege, you get to burn 2GB of RAM while the box is idling. This was an interesting read: http://theody.net/elements.html

@moth @jlamothe @wzqtparor > uARM is certainly no speed demon. It takes about 2 hours to boot to bash prompt (“init=/bin/bash” kernel command line). Then 4 more hours to boot up the entire Ubuntu (“exec init” and then login). Starting X takes a lot longer. The effective emulated CPU speed is about 6.5KHz, which is on par with what you’d expect emulating a 32-bit CPU & MMU on a measly 8-bit micro. Curiously enough, once booted, the system is somewhat usable. You can type a command and get a reply within a minute. That is to say that you can, in fact, use it. I used it to day to format an SD card, for example. well now I want one

@sapphire @Terra_australis @creamqueen @sysrq @wzqtparor nooooooo how dare you run related services on their own VM so they can be independently rebooted, patched, modified, restored from backup, etc. without affecting other servicesyou have to do EVERYTHING with a half-broken laptop you found in a dumpster in 2006 running some obscure distro with no modern installer or package manager
