@RoseSchellinI did all the landscaping back then.I had what was called "spec" plants (example specimens) and most were "exotic tropicals. When I moved, one of the Nursery guys came buy and offered me $1800 for each of my date palms. Very slow growing, I google the old house every year at street level to see how much they have grrown.

@RoseSchellin Lumber prices are starting to recede now (reports). The housing market is insane here. By the time I moved in here (11th) my house had increased in value by $50K . In 4 months. 300,000 new home owners moved here in the first 5 months of 2021.

@EngOnDemand Alright!! Now you've gone and done it!!!Now I'm flat out jealous. I've been feeding them for years. Right now I'm going through 8 cups of sugar water every two days. It will require even more when the Mimosa isn't blooming anymore. And yet I've never seen a humming bird nest. @RoseSchellin

@SweetIceTea @RoseSchellin Hummingbirds are extremely territorial. The ancient Chinese developed war tactics based on the Hummingbird behavior. They had Hummingbird insignia on their shields.I would setup feeding stations in the front yard and back yard. One would sit on the very apex of the roof so it could monitor all the feeders. It was actually hilarious to watch the little guy get drawn away by a competitor and then the others swooped-in to feed.

@RoseSchellin @SweetIceTea Boric acid or diatomaceous earth around the base of the plant holder. If it's hung from a tree, it's really difficult unless you can impregnate the path with the Boric Acid. The good thing about Boric Acid is that the ant actually carries it back to the nest and it kills the colony.Diatomaceous Earth is slower but not toxic to anything but exoskeletons. It dissolves exoskeletons. People actually ingest the food-grade stuff for its nutritional properties.

@EngOnDemand I’m lurking here listening to this advice. Have a hummingbird feeder I have yet to hang. Have a huge maple tree that would be a perfect spot.

@Linnie Here’s the ratio: Combine four parts hot water to one part sugar. Mix it up until it’s completely dissolved. Once it cools to room temperature, it’s ready.

@MMA @RoseSchellin Hydrangeas are so beautiful! We have very erratic luck with ours in CT. I’ve followed every direction, yet it does what it decides to do. The soil is very basic…limestone if you dig deep enough. They were blue when we bought them, but no matter how much acidifying food we give them — they’re pink.No blooms last year, but this year they’ll be blooming. Will take pics.🌸

@Moleena @Cbvheartland2 @MMA @RoseSchellin Definitely. They wilt in bright sun and need regular watering.Grew up near the beach and blue hydrangeas thrived with no effort. Some said it was the soil, some said it was the salt sea air.🤷🏼♀️Regardless, in southern CT they need A LOT of attention. But we have weeds that thrive with no attention.😏

@rarity @RoseSchellin @Cbvheartland2 @MMA My chicken took care of lots of weeds, I moved them around inside a chicken wire frame 😂😂😂I wonder if having goats, like @umad does, would be helpful, or would they obliterate absolutely everything? In new borders I always put potatoes. That killed most crap off.

@EngOnDemand @RoseSchellin @SweetIceTea I use diatomaceous earth in the large plant pots in my front yard. When I don't the fire ants take over. Might try using boric acid next.
