This is Senator McConnell's most significant legacy. The USA will reap the real benefits for decadesMitch McConnell and President Trump presided over the transformation of the US judiciaryIn only one term McConnell confirmed the following Trump nominations:1) 3 Supreme Court JusticesOne third of the Supreme Court2) 54 Appeals Court Judges out of total of 17430% of the Appeals Courts3) 174 District Court Judges out of a total of 67725% of the District Courtshttps://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/how-mcconnell-and-the-senate-helped-trump-set-records-in-appointing-judges/

@WorkTooMuch The GOP cannot pass any policy issue until the Senate and House are both flipped.Right now, McConnell is keeping his troops unified and opposing the leftists. He is a far more effective leader than the hapless Schumer, the Majority leader, who is not accomplishing anything at all.I do not see any other Senator who would be more effective in the future as Leader.

@DougAdamavich No. The transformation of the courts is not 'largely defensive'. It is a genuine and substantial victory and as important as the victories at the legislative and local level. This minimizing and dismissal of McConnell's - and Trump's - achievements in the Judiciary is widespread among conservatives. It is part of a reflexive pessimism on the right that downplays any conservative success. We should be acknowledging this as a genuine victory. Without unnecessary qualifications

@DougAdamavich I don't see the judiciary as less important. The Dems knew how important it was in the 1930s when they first started their ascendancy.I am not entirely agreement about the claim that politics is downstream from culture.I refer again to the 1930s, which would argue against that assumption.I think it goes both ways and alternates.

@timr That makes me wonder - why then does Trump keep talking about McConnell in such a derogatory way? Calling weak, a non-leader, and worse? You said, and I agreed with you, that with Pence, where it was way milder, it was NOT a show, but a real disagreement. What do you think here? Since that's more extreme, maybe it IS a show, to present disarray but be strong (Sun Tzu etc.)?Because REALLY fighting like that after such a cooperation looks very weird to me...@DougAdamavich

@Zemeliko @DougAdamavich Trump blames McConnell in part for January 6th, and for not supporting him; it is a general complain, rather than specific. He is bitter and angry and does not hesitate to express it. McConnell did what he was supposed to do. He did not fail in his duty. In that sense, the situation with Pence is similar. But Trump wanted McConnell to rally the entire Senate, something which would never have happened and would not have changed the outcome anyway.3/4

@Zemeliko @DougAdamavich Later, McConnell denounced Trump in a speech that I think was a serious mistake. I don’t see it as significant at all in the larger context, but Trump was already angry, and that didn’t help. McConnell opposed the impeachment circus as well as the January 6th commission, essentially ending both. That is what matters. But Trump’s opposition to McConnell is deep and there was no acknowledgment from Trump. 4/5

@Zemeliko @DougAdamavich Trump’s criticism of McConnell’s leadership means nothing. @Zemeliko @DougAdamavich McConnell has maintained that unity. Trump’s complaints and unfounded accusations may not have a direct effect on that unity, but it will be an issue as he endorses candidates, and the primaries begin. McConnell will endorse incumbent Republicans who are solid conservatives and need funding. If Trump keeps insulting McConnell, his name will be a drawback. 7/8

@timr @Zemeliko @DougAdamavich @MMA From what I see, Trump reacts because he is hurt. He does not start conflicts with people; he is a big believer in giving people a chance, and he isn't a snob. He will give anyone a chance. I see him as surprised and hurt when people turn on him after he gave them a chance. Because HE tries, he expects the same effort. Reciprocal relationships are what he lives by. I agree with you that Trump's judgment goes out the window when he is upset.

@alpineibex McCain was a scoundrel. He was furious about Trump. He wanted to hurt the GOP. Trump succeeded where he had conspicuously failed. So he punished the entire Republican Party. That is why he did what he did. The only compromise was the one he made with the truth

@timr @bbhack @Zemeliko @DougAdamavich At the risk of being a contrarian here, DeSantis needs to stay put in FL and hold down the fort. He's only 42 and has plenty of time to run. Yes, he's Harvard law, a former Rep, handled the pandemic perfectly, very handsome and Trumpesque...but the real Trump has made it clear he's gonna run again. Dance with the one that brung ya.

@timr @alpineibex @Zemeliko @DougAdamavich I agree with everything you said! Trump is brilliant, but he is not a dirty. I don’t blame him for being angry over 2020 fraud election, but he’s blaming the wrong people! Don’t see that changing cause he has too many people who think he is infallible 2022 is GOP’s to lose, let’s hope they are smarter than that!

1/If I can interject another point of view. I would not say McConnell is blameless. While I agree that he is usually a brilliant tactician and statesman. That all changed in december of 2020. He made a series of head scratching blunders that just made zero sense. Throughout the entirety of the pandemic, the democrats/republicans were pointing fingers at each other blaming each other as the culprit for blocking stimulus checks. @Gmajv @timr @alpineibex @Zemeliko @DougAdamavich

2/All of a sudden mcconell decided to take the full responsibility for being the culprit and even went as far as calling the stimulus checks "socialism for the rich" in a speech. He stood up against the checks and then we lost the georgia seats and the checks went through anyways. Mcconell was also never too supportive of the election fraud battles. He started out saying "let's see what comes of it" but as time went on, He was more and more against it and just wanting to move on.

3/His own state of kentucky was on eof the only republican states that did not sign on to texas' SCOTUS battle. Also when Trump called out congress to repeal section 230, Mitch mcconell jumped out of his seat and rallied the entire GOP to vote against it. A lot of GOP voters at the time were likely looking at that and thinking "wtf is the point of voting?

5/I don't believe Lin wood caused that many voters in georgia to sit it out. Maybe a few, but he could barely muster enough people in South carolina to get him a simple lower level position. He is loud but his reach is not that long. I believe the turnout in georgia had more to do with the sad betrayal and events in december.

6/And that blame can be squarely put on mcconell for all these stupid decisions. Now going forward, I will still ride with cocaine mitch because there's no choice. But I wont pretend that trump is unfairly maligning him when he was clearly playing to lose in december. He just looked like one of those boxers who took money to throw a fight. Until I hear a better explanation for these blunders, I'm not going to change my mind about mcconell.

@watch4thedrop Thank you, it infuriates me when people try to tell me McConnell is brilliant and a huge help to Trump. No, he was not. They had both chambers and the presidency and we got nothing of value done! McConnell impeded the President on many occasions to get real and lasting reform through. So while I applaud his judicial nominee process that’s not enough for me.

@Stacie Yep. and the jjudicial nominations are only theoretically great so far. SCOTUS has cornholed us on many cases already. I don't feel like we have a 6-3 majority at all. not for the important stuff anyways. perhaps that might change in the future but it remains to be seen
