So someone made reference recently to "upstate New York" and we had a bit of a discussion about how aspecific that is.I finally decided to try to quantify it a little further. Picking three points, NYC itself, Champlain in the far northeast, and Ripley in the far SW:Ripley and Champlain are 703km from each other and would take 8h47m to drive.Both are at least 500km from NYC and would take more than 6h to drive.this is according to routing given by OpenStreetMap

@deejoe It seems to be very subjective and based on location. My family has always referred to Carmel as upstate, but when pressed, I always hedge on that, thinking it's not really, but I have no clear delineation.I think it largely starts where any person from the city (or the metro area) is no longer familiar.I'll bet your perspective is quite different.

@murph yeah, I was reminded of this today by some folk discoursing over 'southern california'. I'm also used to this happening around "Midwest"

@deejoe That said, I also have friends that call anything further north than Essex County, NJ .... Canada.So there's that.

@deejoe Yeah, calling Ohio Midwest always seemed strange to me. I thought it should be Mideast, and let them deal with the connotations associated with it.
