I stopped arguing with boomers and gen-x-ers when I realized that most of them are living in a weird space between two timelines. In timeline A, everything was better when they were growing up; people worked harder and played outside in the mud and all the races got along because they were all “Americans”. In timeline B, everything is better now; we’ve got smartphones and computers and easy lives that we should be grateful for, unlike the hard economic times they then claim they endured. “You don’t know how easy you’ve got it” they’ll tout while also singing praises of how much better things used to be. If you want an example of cognitive dissonance, that’s it.

@WoodshopHandman that you dont have to rely on library to find stuff that isnt there anyway. the internet. you have all the info to find out the actual state of the world, to learn anything you want, to get pussy, information, make money. you literally obviously cannot imagine what it's like before the internet. (i'm gen X). there were 2 national conservative magazines. everything was paper. and more often than not, any serious book you wanted wasnt available.

@WoodshopHandman me in high school in 1984. reading national review in high school. the only con mag available widely. could i discuss it with anyone? no. because no one cared. i didnt know anyone who was intellectual. you're completely isolated back then for any kind of serious thought or talk. you could read great stuff from library, and that was about it. there was no way to find anyone else into the same stuff.

There will always be a framing of the benefits technology presents in order to dissuade others from its removal, despite the detriments tipping the scale in their favor. Have you taken a moment to consider:-The increased number of cases of impaired vision in developing children due to proximity to screens?-The neuro-chemical addiction effects of things like pornography and other readily-available cheap entertainment?-The damaging effects of parasocial relationships between those with online soapboxes and anyone willing to listen?-The desensitization to things like hardcore pornography, gore, etc.?-The increased amount of oligarchal control over the masses that has come about via the internet’s increasing centralization?
