New Ongoing Thread on Legislation in the current 117th Congress. There have been many posts on the bills that are currently being considered by the current congress. Several of them have already been passed in the House, with most of them stalled in the Senate. The filibuster has been one of the most significant issues in the news and continues to be. 1/2

The failure of the Democrats to abolish the filibuster has been the issue that provides the context for all legislation. The purpose of this thread is to address the various bills in detail and discuss the issues involved and to provide a context.I will add to it when there is new news and keep it open.2/3

The first piece of legislation addressed here is the Minimum Wage. The House voted to approve a sharp increase in the Minimum Wage, raising it to $15.The Dems in the Senate first planned to include it in the stimulus bill and overcome objections to the increase by making it clear that a vote against the Minimum Wage would be a vote against the massive stimulus bill.3/4

However, the only way to approve the stimulus bill was through utilizing the Budget Reconciliation option. The bill would never have passed otherwise because the Republicans would have filibustered it.However, the Budget Reconciliation option has strict rules and can only be used to pass bills that address budget and finance issues. Also, the House and Senate versions have to align exactly.4/5

As a result, the Minimum Wage increase had to be removed from the Stimulus Bill because it did not come under the heading of what is acceptable under Budget Reconciliation rules. "Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough last week ruled against passing minimum-wage legislation through the budget-reconciliation process."https://www.marketwatch.com/story/15-minimum-wage-wont-make-it-into-bidens-1-9-trillion-covid-relief-package-but-lawmakers-have-other-options-116142992755/6

After the Dems were forced to remove the Minimum Wage increase from the stimulus bill, Bernie Sanders and a group of far-left Senators forced a vote on the policy change anyway although it was pointless. As a result, the Senate had to vote on a stand alone amendment that had no chance of passing. Both Biden and Harris had promised the Minimum Wage increase as part of their campaign. It is one of the most important issues for the Democrat base.6/7

The result was a significant policy failure for the Democrats and also the first evidence that the Democrats would face serious obstacles in achieving the far left policies and goals that the voter base demanded. The forced vote on the stand alone amendment resulted in an embarrassing public failure as well. Eight Democrat Senators defected from their party and voted against the increase:7/8

@timr —First, I would like to welcome you back to the forum.😁👏🏾Second, the fact that EIGHT Democrats (including the 2 from the Cadaver’s home state) object to a $15 minimum wage increase speaks volumes, sending a message their party is anything but united.I will give credit where credit is due: the eight Democrats seem to have some understanding of how business works, and probably don’t want to see companies taking their businesses to Red states.

@BlkLdyPatriot Excellent points. The lack of unity was obvious and a break from the last thirty years when the Dems remained almost completely united. The list included Dems who never suggested even the slightest disagreement with their own party.1/2

@BlkLdyPatriot I agree with the importance of business here. The Dems are so radicalized now that numerous Senate Dems are alarmed by the increasingly extreme anti-business statements and policies of the far left. This will be a problem again for the Dems in the current discussions about the 'infrastructure' bill - the spending and taxes 2/2
