honestly we should just get rid of usb-2.0 ports, if only because they tend to become loose over time quickly compared to usb-3.x ports

my phone for instance keeps disconnecting randomly from my thinkpad's usb2 ports, but I don't have that issue with the usb3 ports

@normandy don't 3.x require a dedicate port on the mobo thoi think it's going to be a slow migration

@Koishi every new mobo has at least one usb3 header (some like mine even have a usb 3.1-gen2 header)

@normandy most current devices have gotten rid of the USB 2 ports. I think current Thinkpad models only have USB 3 A ports and C ports for example. You have a T440p iirc? That's a pretty old laptop :)For some reason desktop motherboards usually still keep a couple USB 2 ports. I guess you're supposed to use them for keyboard/mouse :/

@kepstin yeah I have my two usb 2 ports connected to my keyboard and mouse. I keep kinda forgetting how old my laptop is...

@a1batross @normandy :thonkan: maybe we need to do like people do to their ds stylus and add tape to the usb male

@normandy an annoying thing is that the Q87 chipset used in the T440p does actually support 6 USB 3 ports. I don't know what's going on internally, but the builtin webcam and bluetooth are USB 2 devices, so it seems like they could have made all 4 external ports USB 3 without issue :(

@normandy no, please don't.Please have separate usb 2.0 ports on a separate usb 2.0 root hub on a separate usb 2.0 controller in a separare iommu group

@wolf480pl I mean we can just have a usb 3 controller on a separate iommu group...

@normandy yeah but those are more expensive and rarely come with hubs, and also increase the complexity and attack surface of the driver in dom0...

@normandy well i guess you could just not load the xhci driver and ignore the 3.0 part...

@a1batross honestly most usb 2 controllers and circuitry these days are so cheaply made they die like within a few years

@wolf480pl I honestly wouldn't mind that considering how my experience with usb 2 controllers post-usb 3 tend to be.https://biribiri.dev/notice/A89JC9YMo7QxwatQR6

@normandy What part is loose? Would wrapping tape around the connector make it a better fit? (Apparently that outer sheath isn't the ground, there's a pin for that)

@sjb the port itself. In not entirely sure what exactly is loose in there but plugging anything in would mean they occasionally disconnect
