@alex trezors are quite nice. Ledger had a good product but their production quality fell hard during 2020 and you essentially have to buy two to get a good one.

@waltercool It’s less work, more convenient, and has better client software than the stuff you put on your desktop. It’s entirely FOSS, including open hardware. It opens up doors of possibilities that are simply too frustrating to get past without it.Also it’s more secure than an encrypted USB stick, because it never reveals your private key to the host machine. The host machine sends transactions to it, and it signs the transaction, sending the signed transaction back to the host machine to transmit.

@alex @sev latest version of chrome broke ledger metamask integration and ledger pushed out a fix that requires running their appimage in the background. It's been over a week and it's still broken on Linux.

@sev @waltercool Also, you can back up hundreds of cryptocurrencies with a single mnemonic seed of 12 words. On an encrypted USB stick you’re probably generating a new mnemonic seed for every single wallet.

@alex @sev I'm quite happy with my Trezor One so far. Biggest issue is mobile compatibility, I've yet to find a way to hook it to defi protocols on mobile, waiting on Metamask to add mobile HW wallet support.I kind of regret not getting a Model T, as there seem to be little work done to give the One support for newer coins. I might upgrade later on, but I'm thinking I should probably wait and see if a new Trezor using a chip design from Satoshi Labs' Tropic Square company is coming next year.

@green @guizzy @sev Metamask isn’t FOSS, and so far I’ve managed to do everything with FOSS only. I like Trezor because it makes it easy. I think it can do most of the stuff Metamask can.But it does integrate with Metamask. I just haven’t tried.

@green @alex @sev Pretty comfy; it's the same addresses as the official Trezor wallets, so you can use either one. It stays connected without the hardware being plugged in so you can check balances and connect to services without having to use the hardware and enter the PIN, etc... You only need to do that when you intend to do a transaction.

@alex I was thinking about it, but putting a $200 device on a keychain doesn't sit well with me. With features like U2F and a password manager, it looks like they encourage you to keep it on you at all times just to fully utilize all the features. Guess I could always get the trezor one

@ScatmansWorldFSE @alex I haven't bought crypto in years, but when I did I used a site called Paxful, where you buy Bitcoin by selling photos of Amazon gift cards and the receipt from where you bought them. Obviously shady, and I havent used it in years, but last time I looked at it, the premiums were ridiculously high.

@ScatmansWorldFSE If you care about anonymity you should get Monero instead. Zcash is another option. There are ways to obfuscate Bitcoin’s trail, but fundamentally the public ledger is part of its design.
