I'm not going to bore you with Russia's long, bitter & bloody historic struggle with the Vor (Russian Mafia) let's just say they are a ruthless & unpleasant bunch of Criminals who feed off weakness ALL OVER THE WORLD.Because their criminal enterprises are now Global.Darkside is Russian based but it's reach is THE INTERNET.& now the Vor Gangs fomenting chaos Worldwide are using Darkside as their Ransomware source with Darkside getting a cut of the RANSOM.Ransom paid chiefly in BITCOIN.

These Gangs are targeting anything that uses modern software they can "jam up" using their Darkside supplied Ransomware. Schools, Rental Agencies, HOSPITALS, AIRPORTS & POWER PLANTS with zero regard for Public Safety. They know that by asking for 1 to 2 weeks profit of a major corporation it's cheaper to just pay them for the access key to make the "logjam" go away than to invest time & money into Ransom-proofing their systems. The greed is palpable as the successful ransoms increase.

If you add up all of the attacks & ransoms paid in just the last 4 years alone it's into the BILLIONS.That fund & FUEL a vicious cycle.Gang uses ransomware lvl 4 on Corporation.Ransom is paid. The Corporation INVESTS in breaking Ransomware lvl 4. Succeeds.Gang tries lvl 4 again, there or elsewhere=fails.Gang INVESTS part of ransom in creating ransomware lvl FIVE. Uses it. Gets ransom....See how it works?& when I say the corporations invest, they are passing those costs on to YOU.

Thanks to last Summers rampant rioting & lawlessness enabled by Deep Blue Cities some businesses are abandoning those Cities out of fear of liability as shoplifting Criminals brazenly attack anyone trying to stop them. It's gotten so bad some of these businesses can't shift the losses to the consumer & stay COMPETITIVE.& now ransomware attacks are rising to an all time high in 2021 to exacerbate that.Something had to give.& IT HAS. @DuaneCates Except if the corporations invest in proper backup procedures and training, they thwart ransomware 0.5b thru X. Restore from backups from before the system was attacked, and no need to pay the cybercriminals.(Training employees not to open dodgy attachments would help too.)

@DuaneCates Along those lines, in the mental institution where I worked (maximum security), taking hostage meant no negotiation even if you had taken the governor of the state. Adamant about this and All patients were informed when they came into the hospital. No one ever took a hostage.Folks need to stop paying ransoms, but they need to stay ahead of the criminals by announcing this and making it clear it doesn't matter who or what it affects, no ransoms will be paid.

Did you know the fact the british had broken the Nazis ENIGMA Cypher Machine's coding was one of THE most closely guarded secrets of WWII?When timely & CRITICAL events were revealed the British used subterfuge to "cover" this fact. You know U-Boats are imperiling a Convoy? You change the Convoy's direction & speed BUT you also send out a Sea plane to be SEEN by the U Boats as the plausible explanation so the Nazis don't grow suspicious about ENIGMA's security. This was done DOZENS of times.

@DuaneCates In one regard, the "cloud" helps, since the people running cloud services generally do a very good job with regular backups. I had a client that got hit with ransomware, and it encrypted the contents of the Dropbox folder I'd shared with them (which was actually how I found out about the attack, since Dropbox sends you notices when things change in a folder). Took just seconds for me to roll back that folder in the cloud, but much longer for them to recover their systems.

@DuaneCates It seems rudimentary that Bitcoin would be destined to be outlawed just as soon as it becomes large enough and/or used as a regular replacement for "real" money, defeating the laws against people printing their own money. I'm sure plenty of people invested in Bitcoin know this and simply have been watching for signs that it was time to cash in and get out. Like a Ponzi scheme.

Same as if the greenies decided to ban all gasoline-powered cars, or the Democrats banned whatever they defined as "assault weapons."

@Philly_Fan There have been people speculating about demonetizing cash for years, due its ease of use for criminal activity. It'd be tempting, given that drug transactions use cash to keep the money off the books. Just say that you have to trade in your old bills for new ones, because the old ones won't be money anymore, and we'll see how much gets turned in...

A really quick search reveals that at least in the 1880s, the Supreme Court found that exercise of a state's police power to seize alcohol wasn't a 5th Amendment "taking." But there's been a lot of caselaw decided since that era.

@Chastened @Philly_Fan @DuaneCates That's actually more analogous to "non-fungible tokens" (NFTs). Which I really don't understand the attraction of, given that the digital "art" or whatever can't be viewed except on a computer, where there's no way to stop anyone from making knock-off copies of it once its up on a screen.

@Chastened The amount of gold that was not considered “hoarding” under the order was $100 per individual (equivalent to just over $2,000 in today’s money). Today’s gold price is around $1,900/oz, so that would be like today saying you could only own one 1 oz. gold coin.

@DuaneCates Not sure I can see the banning of Bitcoin happening. Feels more like a Biden blunder, than one of Trump’s scalpels. If the US government has cracked Bitcoin, there’s no way in hell they’re giving that up that power. Banning Bitcoin throws the whole chessboard back up into the air, as everyone finds the next path of opportunity. Perhaps better the devil you know…

@DuaneCates Wouldn't be surprised if Max character in the film was actually a reference to not only Ghislaine, but members of her entire family.Whitney Webb did a fantastic deep dive recently that shows Maxwell sisters information brokering all the way back to early 90s, not to mention all the clandestine ops daddy Robert did in the 80s.https://unlimitedhangout.com/2021/05/investigative-reports/the-cover-up-continues-the-truth-about-bill-gates-microsoft-and-jeffrey-epstein/Cruise also, allegedly, petitioned for Max to be played by a woman (Redgrave) versus a man. Seems more like art imitating life.

@Philly_Fan @Blackbirdearth @DuaneCates It seems weird, since if you get paid in crypto as "wages" and you report the dollar value of it as of the date you receive it as income, it looks like that ought to be your basis for capital gains/losses if you sell it for dollars later. I'm not a tax attorney, but that seems like they're subjecting it to double taxation, as though someone paid you in stock, rather than cash.

@Philly_Fan @Blackbirdearth @DuaneCates The major issue is crypto's volatility, which invokes capital gains. As a result the tax code as it stands is pretty hostile to using it as anything but a security. Do people who have income or buy things with foreign currency have to treat the exchange rate under capital gains? I don't know.

@darulharb @Blackbirdearth @DuaneCates Technically a U.S. citizen can be categorized for tax purposes as an "individual international taxpayer". At one time I was considering a job in the Bahamas. I wouldn't be taxed on the income by the U.S., unless I visited the U.S. more than 30 days out of the year, in which case I would have fallen into that category of u.s. citizen with income earned abroad that was taxable here. No idea if it would have been offset by the Bahamas.

@darulharb @Blackbirdearth @DuaneCates Yeah, it looks like everything is calculated on the value at the time of earning or spending.

@darulharb @Philly_Fan @DuaneCates According to Philly's screencap, its taxed differently depending on how you got it but not taxed twice. As income if you were paid with crypto, as a capital gains tax if it gained value or was sold at a profit. I'm still researching and listening to crypto nerds about it. I didnt want to get into something I didnt understand. And I still dont.

@darulharb They would seize & then destroy the Alcohol Stockpile publicly. As it's creation & possession was a CRIMINAL ACT, a violation of the Volstead Act, there was no compensation during Prohibition, only liability.

@DuaneCates After the law was passed, yes, we've all seen the old films of Revenue agents destroying contraband. But prior to Prohibition, people owned alcohol related businesses, distilleries, breweries, bars, etc. which the government "took" by enacting Prohibition, at least under a modern understanding of the Fifth Amendment.

An interesting outline of the issues concerning exercise of a federal "police power" and the Fifth Amendment's "takings" clause from the Federalist Society, in the context of the BATFE's recent regulatory "bump stock" ban.https://fedsoc.org/commentary/fedsoc-blog/federal-government-orders-surrender-of-personal-property-under-its-police-power-courts-grapple-with-bump-stock-rule-as-a-fifth-amendment-taking

Constitutionally, the federal government could exercise a police power with regard to alcohol Prohibition, because the 18th Amendment empowered it to do so. But for the most part, "police powers" are reserved to the states, and when the 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition, the police powers regarding alcohol were returned to the states by its text.

Contemporary prohibition of narcotics relies instead, as so much of the modern regulatory state does, on the "interstate commerce" clause, which has been stretched out of all proportion during the 20th Century. And regulation of guns has particular problems due to the SCOTUS' recent Second Amendment jurisprudence, beyond whether "interstate commerce" can be used as a justification.

I'd say that the legal model for abolishing cryptocurrency, if that were done in the future, would have to be FDR's gold seizure, for which compensation was paid by the government in whatever other form of money the government chose. I don't think such a policy could avoid being a Fifth Amendment "taking."
