It's exactly like constructing a skyscraper or some other vertical structure.I tried every other method recommended to me, and none of them worked.Kurt Vonnegut wrote out the book on a long sheet of butcher paper that he attached to the wall.He used drawings, labels, and captions. The sheets of paper would be 10 or 15 feet long.Or so he said.Every method I tried left out one thing:ACTUAL WRITING.

With my system, you write the whole bastard out step by step, getting better and better with each word.All you do is write.It's exactly like military training.You develop "muscle memory" for writing, except that it's brain memory.By the time you're ready to start writing for real, you see that you've already been doing so the entire time.Practice makes perfect.What sells books is style. A distinct voice.

@ThomasWic Thank you for sharing that. It was very calculated, informative and easy to follow. I don't write novels but I do love to write short stories. I have one that I have been working on for quite a few years. The ending is kicking my butt. I think that the ending of a story is the most important part. @ThomasWic Just like making a sculpture, without an outline to hang the content on, it's going to be difficult to make a book.It's like a body without a spine, lol. Which basically, with more and more 'weight' or ideas/concepts/content added, collapses and turns into a blob or puddle of muck.In today's climate of information, it's also note worthy that brevity is a good thing. Allow the reader to fill in the blanks, by giving them just enough to take them to that place in themselves.

@ThomasWic Agreed! My book started as a blog/journal I kept while caregiving my demented mother. I kept at it because I needed to write while I was going through the journey. When she died, I no longer needed to write about caregiving. I left it for a year and went back to look at it. I loved what I read (the separation enabled me to read it as a reader) & turned it into a manuscript that was ultimately published by Post Hill Press. A lot of people have bought it and loved it. It's gratifying.

@ThomasWic it's very similar to making a painting or sculpture. work from large to small, get the composition worked out, and then do details and polish at the very end. but get the big picture in place first. also, the best way to start is to start.

The problem is, you can write yourself into too many holes.I'm working on this one to be something similar to what you said. Write down ideas, outline, write chapters...That's at least the idea. Sometimes I think you gotta work out what's best for you in the way you right.The main character is a tribute to my brother. This will mean a lot to me.

I must admit, I'm having a little difficulty with delineating chapters. My story is part modern day and part historical. I go back and forth, but in an easy to understand way.
