In February I mentioned I almost fell for a scam company that offered a business line of credit but then tries to convince you to sign up for a dozen credit cards and pay them 10% of the credit line they open for you.I wrote an extremely in-depth review of this company for Yelp. It's about 10 paragraphs long, in simple English, explaining how the company offers one thing and then sells you another. It got a dozen 'useful' reviews and was always at the top of the Yelp page for it. This was a review written out of the bottom of my fucking heart to help wayward souls too stupid to read the contract for themselves avoid bankruptcy, which is undoubtedly what happens to people who tank their credit signing up for this shit.I check my review today and it's off the front page, in a 'non-recommended' area with 135 other reviews which a) don't factor into the 1-5 score, and b) are hidden from the main page unless you specifically look for them.There has to be extortion and pay-for-play going on with Yelp. There is no way that my review does not qualify as one of the best, most well-written reviews in the history of that fucking website.

@josh You should know better than that Josh. It's 100% possible and realistic to think that companies pay Yelp/review pages in order to not get badmouthed even in the slightest by someone who obviously found their services lacking. Specially when the review page can get bogged down by bot reviews.

@josh Yelp reviews are completely paid and bought. They also straight up harass businesses with nonstop phone calls offering the 'service' of removing negative reviews, louis rossman had a series of videos about his experience as a business owner and the shady shit Yelp pull

@josh Yelp isn't a review site, it's a hustle. They openly display the bad reviews then offer business the option of making them go away, for a price. Trip adviser and similar sites all run the same hustle.

@evilsponge @josh Louis Rossman (the guy who does Macbook repair videos on YT) talked about how Yelp manipulates ratings like this too, years ago. He was on the business end, where Yelp wanted him to pay to improve his ratings.

@josh yelp / etc. are not a public service and they don't have to publish anything. Also imho I don't think there's extortion going on but I find it simple to pay a specialist company from Bangladesh and have hundreds of people vote your review "ungood" in one day :-/ especially if it's scam company :-/

@josh yelp's business model itself is based on an extortion racket. Comments, regardless of who they are made by- cannot be removed by businesses, even if they are out-and-out lies; however, if a business pays for a gold subscription package- they are allowed to delete comments made on their business, to their choosing. This means you can have trolls tank a company's reputation that's just carrying out daily activities, or you can have genuine concerns be hidden from public viewing- the worst of both worlds.

@josh If you really want to fuck with them, report them to a state regulator. I think you mentioned they were in LA (https://dfpi.ca.gov/file-a-complaint/)? It sounds like the sort of fly-by-night setup that will shut down the instant a regulator applies the tiniest bit of scrutiny.

@InceptionState Based.I complained to the intermediary that connected me to them and they've since stopped partnering with them. I was really pissed off because they're a huge financial company that I use to track my finances between banks (i.e. offer them my data for marketing in exchange for their tools) and they sent me to the fucking wolves on this one.

@josh there absolutely is with yelp, as i've heard from another guy who gets business from yelp.i've recently had my negative reviews removed from both amazon and ebay as well which were totally legitimate about shit products and sketchy sellersmost online reviews are fake or manipulated in some way. it's gotten a lot worse just in the past year or 2 though
