Historically, when tribes or cities went to war, it was just that all the males gathered, the ones willing to fight raised their hands, and the rest were tasked with supplying them as they went off for hacky-facky fun times. In most times pre-napoleon, fighting was done by those inclined to fight. The modern conscription, and the cultural obfuscation on what war actually involves does fuck up people. When "fighting for democracy" actually does involve trapping, slaughtering and burning random retarded teenagers that your armys PR group says is just "misinformed friends, waiting to be enlightened", it messes up soldiers.
