@luke I keep seeing the "it's not encrypted by default" argument, but I have never known people actually expecting it to be encrypted, at all.It's been incredibly easy to get group chats set up in, and the ease of bot integration has helped the group chats I'm in on it. The short t.me links have been easy to share a way to get a hold of people, myself included.XMPP and Matrix? I get about 1% conversion when I try to get people to sign up for them. They try to sign up and give up :/

@artilectzed @luke Same here, I can't get people to stay with Matrix.I tried to motivate people, but they don't care. And also, Matrix-Synapse can be a real ressources eater when you start to connect with important rooms.I agree with the privacy talk, but you can't compare in terms of usability for non tech people.

@billiam@shitposter.club Looks like he's anti-Matrix? He's not wrong. XMPP is better on every account. The only reason I have a personal Matrix server is because it's for IRL normie friends. I haven't done a video on Matrix because I don't want to herd a bunch of new people to use it when the slightly less "nice looking" XMPP is better long run. If I can present XMPP in an accessible way, I would just do a vid on that, but the clients suck my normie standard.

@luke @billiam I am vehemently anti-Matrix. My position comes from the experience of running a large homeservers for years and understanding how the protocol works. Regarding XMPP clients, Dino is promising, and Gajim 1.4 will have a new UI more in line with more modern communication programs. Things are looking up ever since Conversations started dragging the XMPP community into this decade.

@twl @luke no, defederation is not a normal thing on the matrix network, I'm unaware of any server-to-server defederation. The most aggressive stance I know about is that New Vector ACL bans domains from CoC controlled rooms, which is like a half dozen stupid rooms no one should really want to be in (like the official tech support rooms).

Every time a new server participates in a room, you now have to trust all events (metadata and messages/media) to *every* server admin/anyone with database access. Even encrypted rooms have the problem of propagating all metadata to all participating servers. Also, the Matrix devs are liberal/commie/furry/tranny assholes.XMPP multi device has greatly improved with MAM, PEP, and the offline spool. The only issue we have is with mobile clients closing OMEMO sessions when they’re tombstoned.

@luke Maybe you could make a video on setting up your own Matrix server, similar to your video on setting up your own website and email server. I've been looking into it but have been finding conflicting information so it would be really nice to have a video going over exactly what you need to do.

@agx@videos.lukesmith.xyz Matrix is inferior to XMPP due to protocol design differences. Matrix replicates all events to every participating server’s database where they are stored forever. XMPP only stores messages if a client requests archiving, and group chats only exist on the originating server. XMPP is basically a message routing protocol, and Matrix is an eventually consistent distributed database.

I reduced my whatsapp conversations from 30+ down to just 8 (4 being group chats for school). And I did make some people switch to signal but others made the whole "muh phone storage" or "I won't install just for one person" bullshit.

@luke Unless you care about all the features in Synapse (Matrix's reference server implementation), Dendrite is really great; light on resources and very easy to deploy and self-host. You may want to do a video on setting up Dendrite so that we see more self-hosted Matrix servers popping up.
