@cell oh yeah dude i get all my music from bandcamp, it rocks. not all artists put their stuff on bandcamp though and not everyone wants to download and manage their music. so the fact that lossless stuff is coming to streaming services makes the audio snob in me very happy

@riku iem cables? over bluetooth? what :what: If you're talking about airpods or whatever, I'm guessing it comes down to form-factor and size.Sony has WH (full over-ear headphones) and WF (earplugs), both bluetooth, but only full-sized ones support sony's own LDAC (better quality, better latency) bluetooth codec. I'm guessing supporting more codecs means more hardware to cram into small space, and if sony couldn't make it into (fairly big) earplugs headphones, apple wouldn't be either, given that airpods are even smaller. Not to mention that you can't get all that great sound quality with tiny speakers anyway.

@hj @riku for real are there any free as in freedom codec implementations for bluetooth audio? besides AAC-LC but that's because the patents have expired

@hj > iem cables? over bluetooth?yup! things like this https://kz-audio.com/kz-bluetooth-50-cable.htmlalso, i get what you're saying about airpods and airpods pro just not having the sapce for higher quality audio gear, that's pretty common. but the airpods max are literally overear headphones that cost $500 and they only do 256kbps aac, even over the cable they sell. there's not really an excuse for that tbh

@riku i'm guessing apple just sucks at making audio hardware and dr dre acquisition didn't help that unsurprisingly.

@riku there's this interesting test of bluetooth codecs over at hydrogen audio, though obviously the actual implementations are going to be different?https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php?topic=120182.0

@cell @riku encoder for LDAC is open-source and implemented in some linux stuff as well as in android, decoder part is proprietary tho.

@riku @cell most likely because usually decoders are part of speakers/headphones, i.e. audio hardware, and sony wants to use it to get advantage in bluetooth audio market, but they still want their codec be compatible with whatever connects to the speakers.it sucks yeah but it makes sense, 'specially when sony have to compete against qualcomm

@riku @cell sony are weird, especially nowadays. Literally killing their own game industry sector to produce... western-oriented blockbuster interactive movies?? :snoyboy: :ps3:

@hj @cell and of all things to make free software inside of their android distro, they choose the theming engine, allowing substratum to use it. weird

@hj @riku @cell Sony is a HUGE corporation, I guess their videogame division is based on America or just heavily inflienced by westerners in general, they have other divisions that create great products.

@lonelyboy77 @cell @riku big company yeah, based in america? not really, they are a japanese company, just like nintendo or yamaha, with big presence in other countries including america. We're talking about sony in general making strange and weird decisions, in many divisions of it.
