@ioy @strawberryfieldsforever i mean for one, the most obvious way to recover the file is to physically remove and mount the disk elsewhere. for another, there's zero advantage to having a file owned by root compared to having your own user own it with appropriate permissions. in fact there's a disadvantage because you need to escalate privs just to read the damn thing

@ioy @strawberryfieldsforever there are password managers, they're meant to be used, i don't really like when people think they're smarter than existing solutions

@strawberryfieldsforever Personally, I use KeePassXC on desktop and KeePassDX on mobile. You do have to figure out a way to sync your database across devices and that can be a hassle for many people though; unless the person I'm talking to is fairly technical, I usually recommend Bitwarden.

@amolith @strawberryfieldsforever bitwarden seems nice; as far as syncing pass gets it right with the git support. the android app supports it as well

@wowaname @strawberryfieldsforever I run a Bitwarden instance for sharing NixNet passwords with @manton. There's odd functionality here and there but still works very well. There are desktop and mobile apps, a cli thing, and I think someone even made a dmenu plugin :thonk: I've used both pass and gopass before but prefer KeePass. XC's libsecret compatibility is really fucking nice

@wowaname @strawberryfieldsforever does it work with the same DB file, or would I have to migrate data? I have been wanting something to integrate with a dmenu-like program so I can get info on my clipboard faster and without the mouse

@strawberryfieldsforever I agree with @amolith here, though I personally recommend KeePassXC even to non-technical people. So far, synchronization of KeePass databases has never been a topic or a major issue.

@io @manton @strawberryfieldsforever @wowaname yus. It's literally a drop-in replacement for gnome-keyring and kwallet or whatever it's called. The applications storing and pulling credentials from it can't tell the difference plus it allows you to use `secret-tool` to retrieve passwords for use in scripts or TUI apps or whatever

@strawberryfieldsforever I use KeepassXC and love it. You have to sync yourself, but I think that's a feature.Recently I've been thinking bitwarden looks pretty nice too - but I havent used it.

@shironeko @strawberryfieldsforever I’ve been considering switching to pass for a while now. But I know I’d have to set up all the GPG stuff, and even though I really should for a lot of reasons, I just haven’t yet.
