The heavily used I-40 bridge at Memphis, TN has been closed to traffic in both directions this afternoon due to a structural crack discovered by inspectors from the Arkansas DOT. @darulharb This will be a nightmare for so many people and industries. Having to use the old bridge, Harrahan, will add so much traffic to I55. Hoping this can be remedied quickly, but glad it was discovered.

I-40 is of course the major east-west Interstate that succeeded the legendary US Route 66, and runs between Wilmington, NC and Barstow, CA. The bridge closure has also suspended north-south Mississippi River traffic past Memphis, some of which I suspect will be rerouted to the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway system for the interim.

@AlNacho1 I'm a Memphis native, and I've long thought about the vulnerable bottleneck for the U.S. transportation system that our "Big M" bridge represents. It's going to be quite a mess until it gets repaired.

The Memphis SuperHub is not FedEx's only hub in the United States, so express service will likely not be affected, and they've issued no service advisories. They've no doubt got a contingency plan for this. Ground service may be impacted, just like all other trucking.@Hula121: "The airport in Memphis is the central hub for FedEx.
