THREADIn the presence of darkness. Today marks the fourth time a case-managing doctor did not and would not acknowledge or make eye contact with me.At all, not even for a moment.Yesterday he asked my wife a series of questions. My wife answered that I had a pacemaker. Doctor nodded, wrote orders for two tests. I thanked him. He ignored me. I waved and thanked him. Ignored. So we walked out.

We picked up the results of the biopsy. Carcinoma. Cancer confirmed. Calm the wife. Step outside for air and back to the doctor. Two more orders, out to the hallway. Another CT scan order. Back to the Dr. No Eye Contact. He snatches back the order and tells my wife, "We need to know more! And because of Covid he can not be admitted to the hospital for another two or three more weeks anyway."

@StevenDouglas Carcinoma cancer is not a life threatening type of cancer. I have had several on my face, scalp, back. Some required Mohs surgery, other burned off still others, the use of a special cream. Where are thet saying you have it? In the colon? Prayers to you and your wife. And also, the doctor at this point.

@StevenDouglas From my short time living in Thailand, I remember many recommended a Philippine hospital (It could have been St. Luke ) as a place to get second opinion. The Philippines hospitals are more "cultural compatible".

@StevenDouglas I don’t understand. He says “we need to know more” but snatched back the CT scan order. Please see someone else. It is exhausting but you need to go with your instincts. Eye contact is important if you care about your patients. His behavior is inappropriate to the situation. Please ask around. Do you know any nurses? They know who are the best.

@Twi_brarian Not sure. Hospitals are basically shut down over a recent Covid scare and foreigners in general are looked at as outsiders. Potential carriers.They wouldn't have any way of knowing that I haven't been outside the country in a very long time. They just see foreigner.ALSO, they see many Vietnamese turned away. The idea that I can waltz in and get preferential treatment MUST stick in some craws. I'm not upset with the doctor. And for all I know he had family killed in the war.

Wow. Prayers answered.Wife just got off the phone for the second time with my hospital director friend from Cho Ray. First call was down, but this last one she was BUBBLING OVER. The head director of surgery (oncologist incidentally) "...know his insurance bad and little money but we find the way with cheapest program in Saigon."Next Thursday she will SNEAK ME IN at Gate 1 at 7am. No matter what, no Covid waiting. He will screen me, admit me, schedule surgery, and perform it himself.

Even better, the director said to take a 10 million VND deposit (about $450) from me, no more. Anything added to that bill he would have the hospital cover and we could work it out later. He said not to pay the final bill until after he reviewed it and forwarded it to another department with a strong recommendation for substantial discounting. My friend spent some of her hard earned markers on me. Twice. Once for my son, who had open heart surgery at Cho Ray - with NO money, no insurance. And now this. To my wife she said, "TELL STEVEN HE OWES ME DOUBLE! MY ENGLISH IS BETTER BUT STILL TERRIBLE, HE OWES ME DOUBLE ENGLISH NOW!"They laughed. @Jaime I had three hours of deep, deep depression today. Not about dying. I can fully accept that and move forward.It was about feeling helpless to help. Especially my wife and children. My genealogy is REPLETE with children losing a loving parent early in life. I DESPERATELY wanted to see that cycle broken. It was almost more than I could bear today, took me a long while to stand small enough to shake it.

Oof! Now I have a VN-EN language problem I need to confirm. She said "next" Thursday, which to us would mean Thursday of next week, right? To many Vietnamese it means THE VERY NEXT Thursday (to occur) - even if it's tomorrow. Many don't know that if you're within a week we say 'this' Thursday, not 'next'. @wziminer —I have a neighbor who went to Sloan Kettering for lung cancer surgery nearly a year ago. She’s been in remission and is doing well.I heard a lot about MD Anderson as well as Cancer Treatment Center (Philadelphia, PA and Phoenix, AZ).The Go Fund Me idea is great. @Merilalla I'm under the impression that some at Cho Ray hospital were embarrassed(?) by what they heard happened at the other hospital. I told them I wasn't upset. It's a difficult time for many now. They're still aiming to show me what I already knew anyway. So, all good. Cho Ray is world famous and arguably the top hospital in Vietnam - highest technology. It's an ENORMOUS feather in any Vietnamese doctor or nurse's cap to be accepted to work there. The competition is beyond fierce.

@StevenDouglas Happy for you that the surgery is imminent. At Mayo Clinic in Jax, FL, we had to wait 2 months before my husband could get his surgery because the procedure was rare. So we waited and watched his health decline. They advised us not to go to a local emergency room if he had a bp incident due to the tumor because they might kill him accidentally. We did find humor in this because you have to! We're all cheering for you!
