#pinephone owners:what os do you run on your phone and why?i recently got mine and i'm leaning towards #phosh on top of #mobian or #postmarketos #pmos but i'm curious what other people are doing.

@murabito I use postmarketOS, largely because I knew of it before the PinePhone was a thing, and I always thought it was cool how they were porting a real OS to old phones to extend their lifespan and functionality. It's also cool that it's not using systemd.I'm not sure what I'd use if not this. I don't like the desktop versions of Debian and Manjaro, so I'd feel a bit weird using them on a phone. There's some sort of NixOS mobile thing that could be interesting. I'm not sure how usable it is compared to more popular stuff. Guix System on my PinePhone would be neat. Not sure if anyone is working on that. There are blobs needed for some bits of the hardware that would make that troublesome, though.

@brad it will be rad if/when the nixos mobile thing ever happens. i currently run nixos on my desktop and i like it. there are a few rather big things that frustrate me about it tbh but overall it has a lot of appeal. haven't tried guix at all yet but there are definitely some things guix does that nixos doesn't (like not force systemd) but the inverse is also true. pretty sure guix doesn't have anything like flakes, for example.i have only used the desktop version of debian for like a few hours probably ever so i don't know much about it but i have a lot of respect for the debian project and i had a pleasant experience using it for the small amount of time i did. it's been around for ages and i like a lot of what they've done for gnu/linux/free software. i disagree with their systemd decision which didn't feel very "debian" of them but i never looked into it that much so i can't really comment on it.i am not a fan of manjaro personally although i can see why some people like it. i used it for a few months but arch ended up being much more to my taste and it didn't break as much. i run arch on my thinkpad (x220) right now. i may end up making my desktop run arch and my thinkpad run nixos but i doubt my laziness will ever allow me to see if i like that way better or not haha. i really hope a lot more apps &c. get optimised for mobile use quickly and that the mobile linux experience keeps improving. i think i will likely end up using postmarketos in part because it seems pretty popular and that means free support on fedi or xmpp or wherever i do my online socialising lol

@khaosgrille i haven't tried gentoo yet. do you know if they have an estimate for when the keyboard will be available? i am also very interested in this accessory. i think the removal of tactile buttons from virtually all phones was one of many bad things to happen to the mobile phone market over the years...

@murabito I run PmOS with phosh, I have tried Mobian with Phosh and Manjaro with Plasma and Phosh. To me PmOS with Phosh comes closest to a usable phone experience although there ate still a couple of pices missing for it to be a daily driver for me, but I am working on it :)

@cowanon i am not very good anymore with on screen keyboards so i've kind of avoided trying this one despite its odd appeal

@murabito Both are great choices. I use @danctnix (because Arch Linux ARM feels like home to me), but if I weren't I would be running @postmarketOS edge. #Mobian is also great, although with Debian #Bullseye getting close to release the #GTK4 story (for things like Megapixels 1.0.1 (the best camera app we have)) is apparently not that promising for now – but I might be mistaken on that and therefore will tag @mobian.

@linmob @danctnix @postmarketOS @mobian i have more experience with current arch than i do with debian or alpine; i'm not sure why i feel hesitant about it because arch is the distro i use on my thinkpad and i love it (for the most part). maybe it's actually /because/ i use its desktop version regularly and the way i use it is very keyboard-focused which is not how i want to be using a computer with a screen the size of a smart phone and no hardware keyboard (yet). then again, i do really want to set it up somehow so i can plug my phone into my television and run kodi on it so i can have a better experience watching [mostly anime] and keeping up to date on what i'm watching. having had limited success with kodi in the past but never using a dedicated device for it because, yes, a raspberry pi or similar device is actually a lot of money to me and i've never been able to justify purchasing one whenever i've had the means to do so lol. do you have any recommendations for what might be the best way to go about doing something like that would be?sorry if i'm making little sense i have a tendency to ramble...

@khaosgrille i'm not even joking when i say i am a fan of the thickness of the pinephone with a hardware keyboard. i hope it's easy to type with and use when it is released (whenever that is)

@murabito #postmarketos is more stable and with manual install you can choose a lot of combinations, fde, f2fs, phosh, plasma-mobile. choose mobian if you want that "apt" feeling. 😜
