Reading an interview with Linus Torvalds (https://www.tag1consulting.com/blog/interview-linus-torvalds-linux-and-git) and then I see a link to a video about which desktop PC he uses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kua9cY8q_EI)Hmm, that looks familiar ...- Same case- MB designed for overclocking, but not doing that- Same CPU fan- Same case fans- Fans configured to 'silent' in BIOS- AMD CPU (mine is older)- AMD GPU (mine is better)- Overpowered and good quality PSU (mine is 'better' though)Apparently we focus on the same things in a PC build π π€

@FreePietje yeah I unplugged my case fans because I really don't need that CPU idling at 45C when 60C won't hurt it. But now I have no fans spinning in the pc except when gaming, which I do with headphones on anyway. Bliss. Also one cat loves sleeping on top of the tower now.

@egret If the fan connectors are easily accessible then you can indeed do that. I unplugged some fans in my 'media file server' as it's only serving files so rarely relevant CPU activity (and it's off when I'm not using kodi). But the main problem is that it has an old MB, so no proper PWM functionality. If the MB does have it (+BIOS support) and you combine that with Noctua/SilentWing fans, you'd normally only hear them with your ears <10 cm.

@FreePietje the ones I unplugged are silentwings that my purebase 500 came with. They are loud. The cpu cooler is Noctua and I cannot hear whether it's on or off. GPU and PSU also has zero rpm modes below heat thresholds, that was the goal when speccing the machine. R53600 chugs along nicely without thermal spikes.

@egret Loud fans are (indeed) an instant disqualifier. I have SilentWing3 fans and they are quite. They are in my Darkbase 700, but I also have them (probably built in myself) in my main server.Noctua CPU fans all around here. They may not be cheap, but they are soo worth their money :) I cannot hear them either.PSUs also have zero rpm modes hereI actually have no idea wrt my GPU fans. I don't hear them, but I also don't ('evar') stress them.

@FreePietje Now that we are talking computers, have you had any rendering issues with Chromium in bullseye? I'm on kernel 5.11.16-051116-generic with amdgpu 20.45-1188099, and sometimes I experience a line across image thumbnails. It comes and goes, and I never really bothered to fix it.

@egret I don't use chromium as it's fully controlled by Gπgle.I do notice that you're not using a Debian kernel (Ubuntu?) and it looks like you installed AMD's proprietary GPU drivers? I use kernel 5.10.0-6-amd64 and its amdgpu drivers that are built into that.

@FreePietje Now that you mention it, the amd gpu was a remnant from other times. My first 5600xt arrived with a dead fan, and I was debugging whether it was sw or hw failure out of the box.As for Chromium, I agree, but I'd rather have a browser that works well. Firefox is not going in good directions, and haven't implemented features that they promised 5-6 years ago (inline translation like Chrome does. It's a must have for me unfortunately), and the addons that try to fill the gap are all crummy and don't work well.
