after many years I need to concoct a PDF portfolio. something simple: horizontal A4 with pics and a simple layout. What are my options in terms of software? I'm tempted to use Onlyoffice on Nextcloud…

@entreprecariat Scribus? I’ve started to somewhat appreciate it for simple layouts.

@entreprecariat I use LaTeX. If you combine with Gimp or Inkscape it should be doable without getting super complex.

@entreprecariat @alcstrt I've been using Scribus quite regularly for the past year or two and for the most part it works as advertised, especially for simpler layout. Though there is some bug (feature?) where the textboxes handle diacritics weirdly but if you are doing an English portfolio it shouldn't be an issue.Otherwise if you are feeling experimental you could try out something like html2print, paged.js or Even (https://xxyxyz.org/even/)

@kurbitur @alcstrt trying Scribus in the meantime. All okeysh, besides a very "flat" interface (not so much visual hierarchy in the menus) + a clunky way to resize images within frames.

@entreprecariat @kurbitur I started to be super attached to writing Markdown files and generating PDFs with Weasyprint for these kinds of things. And since Pandoc added Weasyprint as a pdf-engine, this workflow has become even smoother :-----)

@manetta @kurbitur within this workflow, are you able to crop images?

@entreprecariat @kurbitur No, not in the way as you can do it in GUI tools (not that i know of at least!). I often prepare the images in parallel, using Gimp, and i collect them in a folder.

@entreprecariat Had problems with the 1.5.6 version, but reverted back to 1.4.6 and that one is relatively smooth

@entreprecariat @alcstrt Yeah there's a bunch of things that feel pretty clunky like the image thing so you often have to wrestle a bit with scribus to get the desired results. But there's not really many other options, at least for linux :unwanted_thinking:

@entreprecariat I'm using Zettlr to write in markdown, export as an html and use pagedjs to design it and pint it. (not best workflow but that is conveniant)
