The reason the US military gave up on SLAP. 50-caliber rounds is that the plastic sleeve can break apart inside the barrel, leaving a dart that makes gouges as it flies.As a result, the military issue ammunition is getting hard to find.SO GUESS WHAT?People make their own in their basement and sell them.Each round costs about $100.

When you buy a round that somebody made in his basement, you're playing Russian roulette.Obviously the round that exploded the gun was far too powerful for the weapon.AND.That model of rifle has no safety feature that allows gas from exploding rounds to escape.So it was an accident waiting to happen.

ADDENDUM:I forgot to add that the US military has been sabotaging small-arms rounds since the Vietnam war. They pack them with TNT so that they'll blow up the enemy's weapons and hopefully kill him.Those rounds have made it back into the US, due to the glut of foreign-made ammunition.There's absolutely no way to tell these mini grenades from normal rounds.Nice, eh?

@ThomasWic Great thread. I wonder if the reason the ranges you went to were disappointing is because you are in California. I am a fairly new handgun owner ( I have two S&W's- a 380 and a 9mm. The gun ranges in my (blue) TX city are awesome. The instructors are very knowledgeable... most are ex-cop or ex-army. The ranges were mask free throughout (almost) the whole 'pandemic.' It was the one place we could be "normal." They were a haven, inside or out.

Load tables in published Reloading Manuals are the only safe way to go. Those that try reload recipes listed in forums are playing with dynamite in my opinion.

@EarlThePearls Yes, I saw that video too. It seems to me, that guy knew he was taking a chance with the choice of ammo and gun.I don't think that the average person just protecting their homes and families would think that TNT could be in their ammo. That would be tragic.

@ThomasWic People aren't buying the narrative Dems are pushing about Jan. 6. Dist. 6 in Texas had a special election and 62% voted GOP in the House election. Dems were shut out from the runoff. Trump's endorsed candidate got the most votes and will be up against another Republican in the runoff.

@drawandstrike @ThomasWic Years ago I had a .22 semi auto. One particular time in the woods it "double fed".In other words the extractor failed to fully grasp the spent shell casing and grabbed the next round and placed it neatly in the ass of the spent casing still in the chamber. Bolt open now and me unaware. Yep it fired.Immediate shell shock.Once I shook off the staggers I wrapped the barrel around the nearest tree.

@EarlThePearls I can't answer those questions.End cap? At which end of the barrel? Most 50s utilize a muzzle brake that redirects gasses to the rear, to reduce felt recoilin most designs the hammer will strike a firing pin, which transfers the impact to the cartridge primerVented? no idea.

@EarlThePearls working strictly from the video, I'd suspect bad ammo.Smokeless powder degrades over time. Ammo stored improperly can break down. The basis of Modern gunpowder is nitrocellulose. Invented by Mr. Nobel of the prizes.The difference between 50K PSI and 80K PSI could be from that degradation.the previous round that hit low,also had an excessive flash at the muzzle. that round was possibly also over pressure, weakening the rifle.

@DonnaLea @ThomasWic I just got in the habit of unloading it prior to taking it in my vehicle, always hopeful I won't need to use it when I''m out and about. But it's there for extreme emergency, like vehicle breakdown etc. At home it's always loaded with one in the chamber & safety on. Also, It keeps me aware of the condition it's in, whether it could use cleaning and lubrication, etc. Someone told me to unload the clip frequently bc it's good for the spring. Don't know if that's true.

@rosemaxx7 Interesting. As I said I only unload when cleaning or passing through MD. The past year Iāve been chancing it. Iām on in MD for 12 miles so Iām not taking the time to unload and separate for that short distance on back roads. MD requires you to unload and have your firearm and ammo separated. @ThomasWic

@rosemaxx7 I usually only travel in DE, PA, MD and VA. My 2 permits cover most of the east coast. I asked hubby about the spring thing and he said everybody has their opinion about it. Pro and con. Stay safe and Carry On.
