Has anyone noticed how the “Be kind” mantra is being pushed and pushed? I’ve seen it on T-shirt’s, in household decor, coffee mugs, even on kids (well, girls 🙄) clothes. It’s the new “live.love.laugh” and seems to be everywhere.I think it’s all (not so) covert brainwashing directed at women and girls. Telling women to “be kind” and shut up, discard your boundaries, ignore your instincts, be a doormat... All it means is “don’t question anything because it may hurt someone’s feelings, put up with a ton of shite quietly and with a smile on your face!” Also, if someone needs a coaster or a pillowcase to instruct them on how to be a decent person then that person probably isn’t that kind or that intelligent to begin with...

@Icarus_girl96 Fuck being kind - look where that has historically gotten women. We don't need to be kind. We need to be honest (about biological reality), to be focused, fierce, and confident in ourselves. This is definitely pushing the "sweet and silent" narrative.

@Icarus_girl96 It's disheartening to see "Be Kind" used to prop up false identities & the denial of biological sex. As a decent human being (I hope), I orient myself toward kindness for all beings. But sometimes we can only humor the delusions of others so far. How can it be unkind to stand up for our children, our legal status as women, or our safety? It is NOT unkind.

@Icarus_girl96 These are all good points. I am also struck by the fact that telling people what to do, at all, as an everyday part of polite society, is a phenomenon of just the past decade or two. All we had in the 20th century was, "Have a nice day," to which some people jokingly objected.Do you think having cashiers say something like, "Be kind," as customers head out the door, could be next?

@HebrideanHecate @Icarus_girl96 right!? Kind can be an ethical stance, but nice is just a social strategy. They are not the same thing, and it bugs me that they are conflated this way. Like sex and gender.

But what are some slogans or even “mantras” that you would like to see on T-shirts, mugs, and decor items? I think I’ve seen @distortedlinds with “Keep it Real.” This is getting my imagination going. What other phrases can you think of? Particularly around keeping one’s boundaries.

Things that I consider as aspects of kindness such as not lying to people (even when it would be easier to humour them), treating folk as adults with personal agency, and being clear about expectations are not in line with the new orthodoxy.

@Icarus_girl96 The thing is - we real women are told be "kind" to everybody BUT OUR OWN DARN SELVES! That needs to be our counter for this garbage --- you get the "be nice, be kind" gambit and you knock back with the "yes, I am being kind and nice to myself and all other real women"Then ask why men who claim to be women are never told to be kind, to be nice, to budge over and give up their demands.
