I'm watching the handmaids tale and I find it very upsetting. You'd think I'd stop after season 1 but I'm onto season 2. Yes, it is very upsetting. Why am I watching this?

@0cean One other thing - nothing is quite as shocking as season 1. You won't have to worry about the rest of the show being so stomach turning. Season 1 really slams you in the face and sets the foundation for the rest of the series. Season 3 is so gratifying in so many ways. I can't imagine cutting the show after season 1 and not getting to that point in the storyline.

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling Okay, I'm going to keep giving it a chance. I am a sensitive soul and there was one time in season 1 where I stepped away like "Whhhyyy did they have to put that in?!?!" and the opening of season 2 is also pretty harsh, haha. I'll just try not to watch it right before bed and maybe I'll be okay.

@0cean I got through the first season but have since never deemed myself in the right headspace to continue onto the following seasons. I just hope it ends well... whatever that means in that universe.

@0cean @FemaleIsNotAFeeling I read the book when I was like 15 and I don't think I could stomach the show

@0cean @FemaleIsNotAFeeling I deliberately do not watch scary or violent or depressing tv shows and movies or listen to depressing negative music. Don't watch shows where women are stalked and murdered, like Dateline and Forensic Files. That cuts out the majority of entertainment available. I didn't want to watch The Handmaid's Tale as I read the book back in the 80s and still have my copy. So I knew it was about increasing oppression of women. People should be careful about what they feed their minds. I don't need to have more nightmare fuel in my life.

@GalacticTurtle @0cean Did season too get better? Or worse. Still on the fence about watching it honestly

@PontiacWitch @GalacticTurtle I just started episode one of season two and right away it got almost heavier than I can stand. It's just watchable enough that I can't seem to justify stopping, but bothersome enough that I keep questioning if it's good/worth it for me to watch.

@0cean @GalacticTurtle Yeah I'll pass... I don't like my media to depress me too much.

@BeachBleach @FemaleIsNotAFeeling I will watch some movies and TV shows that have heavy topics if there is some sort of overcoming of them. However, I get turned off by too much violence, and I find that many modern TV shows and movies have a lot of violence that doesn't help the storyline and is unnecessary. You can communicate the same issues without overdoing it. At a certain point, becomes glorifying of violence and is feeding society's sickness for a shock factor.

@0cean @FemaleIsNotAFeeling I don't mind movies talking about heavy stuff or history that really happened, when there's a resolution. I agree. I think putting in violence, or especially violence against women, is just lazy writing. It takes work to show human relationships and the give and take, and they make up entire movies/shows out of nothing but threats and violence. Then you have a complete waste of everyone's time.

@0cean I tried watching it because I read the book. I just fast forward through the rape scenes. That makes it a lot easier to watch.

@Kay I feel pretty detached through the rape scenes but I really am bothered by brutal murdering scenes, where you see the person getting killed.

@0cean Just fast forward through those scenes then. Don't torture yourself, just to say you watched a popular show. I had similar issues with Game of Thrones. I fast forwarded through all the rape and violence. Those long episodes are actually quite short when you skip all the violent bits. Eventually I gave it up altogether, because it wasn't worth it.
