Can you hear a buzz or hum in this clip? I can't @darrenoneill can... Can you?https://static.noagendasocial.com/media_attachments/files/106/103/618/646/694/529/original/aed1a9f3f99912c0.mp3

@Genen @darrenoneill My amateur tips: I'm using OBS and the Audio Mixer filters "Compressor" and "Noise Suppressor" help a lot. Other than that be sure you aren't in a room with many flat hard surfaces.Best way is to hang blankets all over the place, or even fill the room with tons of cardboard boxes, etc. Or go pro and get actual dampening to put on the walls.Your signal does have slight "small room and flat surfaces" effect to my ears, but no buzz or hum.

@Genen @darrenoneill Even big flattened boxes leaned against the wall at an angle to stop or deflect waves towards ceiling can do it.Getting rid of standing waves is even more effective than an expensive mic I'd bet. Am I right @adam ?

@WClayFerguson @Genen @adam For room reverb, yes. Anything that can deflect or absorb. This was a solid hum, which could have been one of Gene's neighbors cutting the lawn or using a leaf-blower.Reverb is everywhere these days. Just edited a clip of Candace Owens from Tucker Carlson last night that had a TON of reverb on it.

@Genen @darrenoneill I hear a bit of background noise but very slight.

@darrenoneill @Genen @adam Also Dave Rubin is kinda bad. I heard the reverb and then looked and noticed a perfectly flat wall like 6 feet behind him in his studio. I think some people just aren't aware, or can't hear it somehow.I didn't know how good audio could sound until I hung tons of sheets and blankets, cardboard boxes, etc in my tiny home office. Difference is night-and-day. I plan on covering my walls with acoustic panels soon, just for video-conferencing quality.

@WClayFerguson @darrenoneill @adam yup. My studio was sound insulated. Totally dead. My office at home just has one wall of egg carton foam, so not bad, but not like the studio used to be.

@Genen @WClayFerguson @darrenoneill when I set you up with time last night, you had a faint him even when your gate was closed. Could be anything. Probably a ground loop.

@Genen @darrenoneill I think I hear something? Took a while to pick up on it though.I can understand what you're saying though and I really don't care, I'm glad I can still hear with one ear.

@darrenoneill @Genen @adam @WClayFerguson I could hear it, but not on the first listen. I'd say there is a hum, but someone listening in their car, on crappy earbuds, any ambient noise, etc. wouldn't notice.

@lizzymoda @Genen @adam @WClayFerguson That is true. At first I thought it might be an idling truck or something outside. Then paused the audio and it disappeared. My eyes suck, but I can hear pretty well.

@darrenoneill @lizzymoda @adam @WClayFerguson if you can tell me the frequency I can remaster the episode with a notch filter - I can't hear it so going blind.

@Genen @lizzymoda @adam @WClayFerguson Do a high-pass over 40Hz and you should eliminate it and not really hurt the other audio.Trust the spectral analysis!

@Genen @darrenoneill @lizzymoda @adam I'm not an audio engineer, but I know before I filled my office with hanging blankets, boxes, and got rid if EVERY flat surface I had those "overtone" issues. There's no fixed frequency (not even the standing wave frequency) that is detectable because the sound is bouncing too randomly.Fill your room with clutter and lots of soft sheets and stuff, and record again and you'll be SHOCKED. Recordings will *then* sound like a person and not a recording.

@Genen @darrenoneill @lizzymoda @adam By "detectable" I meant detectable in a spectrum analyzer. But that overtone is something you start noticing everywhere once you learn how to get rid of it. If your recording doesn't sound like someone sitting next to you talking then you know it's got overtone issues. It should sound just like a person sitting beside you EVEN with a cheap mic, if your room is echo deadened properly.

@WClayFerguson @Genen @lizzymoda @adam Understood, this was a solid tone. I think Adam may be correct saying it's possibly a ground-loop.Reverb and reflections are much harder to deal with. There are some decent plug-ins that can reduce the level quite a bit without hurting the original audio, but you are correct, physically preparing the room is the best way to do it, if one can.

@darrenoneill @Genen @lizzymoda @adam There's no substitute for just starting out with a clean signal. Unless you've actually done it, by filling room with hanging blankets, and cardboard boxes like I did, it would be like explaining the color 'red' to a colorblind person. People are so used to hearing horrible audio recordings they don't even realize how good a recording sounds in a good studio. But enough blankets is as good as a million dollar studio.

@Genen @lizzymoda @adam @WClayFerguson In the Bemrose episode, that's where the noise is. So, "always" must not have happened on that episode.

@darrenoneill @lizzymoda @adam @WClayFerguson OK... I figured out the mystery! When reconfigured the routing on my MOTU last month to make it work with Signal for doing interviews, I output the raw unprocessed audio to computer 1+2 instead of processed. BUT I was still hearing the processed in my headphones during recording. SO gate, hi-pass, compression were all bypassed for about 10 episodes. Thanks to @darrenoneill for pestering me enough to figure it out. So NOW that's fixed!
