@rghvdberg I think they're the most courageous, don't @ meBut in all seriousness, yes that's pretty annoying. I don't think those people think they're as "cool" as they appear to think. Then again, it's all up to interpretation and intent

@brandon How group identity is often a requisite for validating individual experiences. Also how commonly people assume that everyone else is "acting in bad faith". If a third of people believe something you disagree with, it's probably a bigger problem than "bad faith". The real "bad faith" is when people try to avoid finding a common ground, which I see very often (instead, people only focus on what is "wrong" with the other persons perspective).Assume good faith and seek a common ground people!

@brandon @rghvdberg Meh. I did this recently. It's because I don't have the headspace to respond to discussions, but still would like to put a view "out there."

@brandon the insecurity and slander many do around software choices. Especially bad with open source and linux.

@brandon I'm starting to have trouble distinguishing between reactionaries and progressives. Not because of ‘horseshoe theory’ but because they’re starting to sound equally shrill and self-righteous.

@brandon Not much ever since I turned myself into a passive observer. However, it does seem like there's a lot more emotions involved with tons of logical fallacies + groupthink + blatant agendas + astroturfing you name it, lots of repetitive patterns. Plus discussions with online strangers are often time and energy consuming. I'd rather spend time being productive or enjoy some real world activity.

@brandon I have a hard time finding good examples of rational discussion between two sides with different views. It's much easier to find people from camp A attacking strawman representations of camp B and vice versa.

@pheonix I'm slowly but surely moving onto your attitude. I've been catching myself in those destructive behaviours and I've also been watching some of Julia Galef's videos. It's hard to take yourself out of the equation when looking at some of the conversations online but what really solidified wanting to retract myself from that kind of discourse has been knowing that I'm making very little impact in the grander scheme of things. Small impacts like that are now reserved for people I know IRL

@starbreaker It's the effect of radicalization plus infighting. Some folks are focusing on the 10% that's wrong while ignoring the 90% that's ok or right

@soupglasses Oof, this hurts to read :( I haven't myself faced any of this, for the most part, but I can't help but think that there are people who have experienced far worse than any of the criticism that I've faced.Again, it's a case of folks focusing on the 10% that is remaining to go in terms of progression towards some moral imperative, while ignoring the 90% that some have already accomplished

@celia @rghvdberg What do you believe getting the view out there without discussion accomplishes? In French we would say "Qu'est-ce que ça donne", which roughly translates to "What is the benefit?"

@kakure I wonder how much of that is an effect of the pandemic. Folks in isolation can have a tendency towards anger and aggression and when you put them in a place where they feel like they have to defend their beliefs on top of that, it's hard to qualify yourself. I think a lot could benefit in taking a moment to say "is this worth it? Is this argument impactful? Is it worth my time? What benefit does either of us get from this conversation?"

@Shrigglepuss @celia @rghvdberg My question was not meant to be confrontational in the least. I was curious as I personally find complaining for the sake of complaining to be draining on myself and prefer to write either a longer post, or get a discussion going around the thing I had complaints about. I wanted to know where Ru was coming from in her situation

@rghvdberg @brandon @celia Not within the medium themselves, no. If there's no feature to disable replies to a post on this platform yet then saying "don't @" is a perfectly fine way to set that boundary for now. I'm not sure why somebody setting a boundary on interacting with them is such a problem for you when you could just get over it and move on instead

@brandon @Shrigglepuss @rghvdberg I had to mute the people involved in this discussion (fair disclosure) as I couldn't engage anymore at the time.I'm dropping a link to the original toot where I wrote "Don't @ me" so you have more context, Brandon: https://fosstodon.org/web/statuses/106034219609713618Here's another toot where I speak highly of both XMPP and Snikket as a project: https://fosstodon.org/web/statuses/105711836797110108I'm sorry - I don't want to engage more at this point, but I felt it was important to provide context for my situation.

@celia Thank you very much for this follow up. I appreciate it even more while keeping in mind that you were not obligated to do this.I understand where you're coming from, especially with the "Linux users recommend those who are less technologically inclined really insane defaults", and I think it's the community's greatest weakness.Thank you for clearing up and indeed, with the context it makes more sense. And I hope that you continue participating at your own pace here :)
