It was all about control.I watched an episode of " I survived" the other night. A guy who had a bad time at a police summer camp shot up a mall and took hostages who he threatened to kill if the cops didn't locate the two officers who made fun of him 20 years earlier.Thank God I wasn't there.In the end the guy surrendered and was sentenced to 600 years in prison.I would've pretended to be his buddy, and when I got him to lay down his rifles...Well, it wouldn't have been pretty.

The area where I live had its heyday during the Arts & Crafts / Art Deco era and there are a number of older homes that have these features.

@ThomasWic My mom hoarded a bit, while my dad was the total opposite. After they passed, there was a garage full of junk to sift through - old Crisco cans filled with nails, empty biscuit tins from the U.K. that might be "collectible," boxes of old wrapping paper going back to the 60's, old fans, washing machines, boxes of magazines. Horrible experience clearing out all that stuff, but cathartic. I will never be a hoarder.

So much so I threw on a coat over my pajamas to walk to the nearby 24 HR. pharmacy.Walked out the door (2nd fl.) & fell down 15 very steep concrete steps. When I hit the bottom I thought I died for a second. Meanwhile the downstairs neighbor (1st floor by stairs) yells “KEEP IT DOWN!”Only in NYC.I bought 5 bottles of painkillers.

The fact I seem to move on average about once every couple of years has helped me always go through everything and purge . I still feel I could do better ... @ThomasWic We're getting ready to move and have started packing. We have to leave enough here to stage the house and live here, and have company coming in May. So it's kind of declutter plus right now.We don't have a whole lot, but the new house has less storage so some stuff has to go. My wife owned a shop in San Antonio years ago and still has some of her stock - nice stuff but of no use to us. @ThomasWic Looking forward to watching it. My BIL is a massive hoarder. There were narrow pathways covering the entire house. Floor to ceiling antiques, junk & just crap. In the basement he hoarded safes stuffed full of gold & silver. We don’t speak to him, haven’t in years, but as far as I know he still lives this way. He does “sell” things at local flea markets but only for exactly his asking price. NO discount at all. He is a miserable man. A greedy liar. But a rich one. And so what? 🤷♀️

@ThomasWic My grandfather was what we called a Pack Rat. When he passed away in 1979 and my parents were cleaning out his garage, they came across a WWII-era hand grenade. They immediately called the police, who sent the bomb squad to detonate it in their special can.

@StevenDouglas @ThomasWic too long a story to tell, let it suffice that I had been gone for 5 years when I sold what was left after son and sister took what they liked and those that came for the sale were allowed to just take or offer whatever they chose. Best and fun garage sale. Surprised most people offered more than I would have asked for.

@CClark @EmmaP @ThomasWic I used to feel that way when visiting Grammy but I loved her so much. I still feel bad because she asked if I wanted to move in after gramps died and I didn’t because of that hoarding thing. My uncle cleaned things out once (he moved in with her instead) when she was at the hospital . He figured he could do it and “. Surprise “ her .. SHE WAS PISSED !!! Oooof .. it did not go over well.
