I wish I could remember the lie I was caught in but I can't. It was a stupid one, and I had nothing to gain by telling it. We were at a family gathering in Garden Grove one night when a casual conversation between everyone revealed incidentally revealed PROOF POSITIVE that I had lied to Jim. About something. AND HE KNEW IT ALL ALONG.Jim didn't blink, just kept talking about this, that and other things, as if it didn't happen.

Jim was one of my greatest friends and mentors. He was also a history buff - a voracious reader who taught me in an all-night coffee-fueled conversation in a laundromat about the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government - among a thousand other things. A winner of a loser in life. He could never get his outer life together but inwardly he was well founded, wise, and armed to the teeth.And he taught me how to apply my gifts to read people. Including him.

To Jim nearly everyone was predictable. He was intrigued by anyone who wasn't, which is part of why he found me interesting (called me an enigma, actually).In 1979 Jim and I were having beers in the lounge half of a Mexican restaurant in Visalia, CA. A small band was playing and people were dancing. I didn't know it, but I was about to find out just HOW good Jim was at reading people, and just what a brilliant tactician he was in terms of how predictable they were to him.

Had a GREAT warm, lighthearted talk with a very sweet soft-spoken Rose. What happened next is something I will NEVER FORGET. Bimbo came back and was introduced. Forgot her name, so, Bimbo still. But Rose and I, engaged in conversation, went back to that conversation. Bimbo began "searching for something" down by our feet. Rose was looking at me. I looked at her and we both stifled a knowing laugh. Delicious to me, delicious to Rose and, most of all, delicious to the onlooking Circus Master behind us. @EarlThePearls @blackhawkPATRICK.That was his name, the expat I knew from South Africa. Eight of us around a table, all from different countries. Niels from Denmark asked what we all looked for in a woman. So around the table it went as everyone thoughtfully weighed in.In the middle of someone's pregnant pause Patrick blurted, almost to himself, "I like slutty women."Everyone lost it. That was a laugh for everyone that extended well into the rest of the night.

@StevenDouglas great anecdote!I had a mentor through my early years and into my late 20s. His ability to read people and situations was unparalleled and actually quite intimidating. He was a medical Dr. and a naval officer and used his knowledge to further the āinterests of the nationā.He taught me to harness and interpret inputs in a similar manner. That ability has been both an asset and a burden at different times in varying situations but Iād not āunlearnā what I know.Thanks
