Bitcoin (and proof of work mining in general) is a crime against humanity.

@aral PlayStation and items left on standby are also crimes against humanity. If we're rating crime on energy consumption that is.

@aral lack of carbon-taxing is a crime against humanity, not what you do with your electricity.

@AstaMcCarthy @aral I'm always a huge fan of forcing poor people to choose between heat and food while not affecting rich people at all. They can just sit back and think about their crime of being poor. Maybe they'll make the moral choice and die of starvation or freezing and help save the planet! That way the clearly morally superior rich and powerful people can have more to consume without the poors getting in the way!#environmentalism #dotherightthing

@AstaMcCarthy How did it become “your” electricity, exactly?

@aral @AstaMcCarthy If it is not 'your' electricity, then what gives you any authority on how it may be used? What gives you a right to say what 'good' use is, or what 'bad' use is?

@berkes @aral @AstaMcCarthy What a stupid argument. Of course we can talk about good and bad even when it does not involve our own property.

@mvz @aral @AstaMcCarthy you can only discuss what *you* deem bad, considering *your* values and viewpoints. For a Christian, the energy 'wasted' on streaming porn is bad (same use as Belgium). For a pacifist, energy to power worlds' military is 'bad'. And for me, energy wasted on blaring billboards that sell me sugared water is bad (same use as argentina). And so on.Should we mark all those 'bad' and then push to dissallow them?

@berkes @aral @AstaMcCarthy Yes, everyone has different viewpoints.Thankfully, Christians, pacifists and you can all talk about what uses are bad and good. And disagree about them.Dismissing that discussion based on ownership is silly.

@mvz @aral @AstaMcCarthy you misunderstand me.My point is, that if you have a valid opinion on what is 'good electricity use' and what is bad, you have no way to push that opinion onto the owners of that electricity. Other than some elaborate central CPC alike government, that is.Lets' say we all agree mining Bitcoin, streaming porn and lighting christmaslights is bad. Now wat? Install a global electricityfilter? And who operates that?

@aral @AstaMcCarthy I'm not saying that Bitcoin isn't burning en energy like mad.But I am saying that we don't have any right to say that mining is improper use, while $otheruse is proper use.

Use a cryptocurrency that doesn't involve a power race?https://duniter.org/en/is-duniter-energy-consuming/That one unironically has more common use adoption than most other cryptocurrencies.

@likho as a proof of concept, Peercoin has always been my favorite. But technically, it brings other issues to the table. I'm excited about ETH (and putting my money where my mouth is: I'm staked), but sceptical.Every scheme has a tradeoff. I'm not familiar with duniter, but for both ETH and peercoin it is obvious: the rich get the vote. That may be worth the decreased energy usage, depending on your viewpoint (and probably your wealth)

I'm skeptical about proof of stake and voting based systems because there's no perfect voting system that doesn't involve gaming the system at the expense of beliefs or honesty.Duniter is based on The Relative Theory of Money (written by a French economist). https://en.trm.creationmonetaire.info/

@berkes @mvz @aral @AstaMcCarthy Mining is using much more electricity than other stuff for a currency that speculates increasing the price and decreasing to just make money as inversions where you can turn into rich or poor, while Nano currency never changes its value. So mining (wasting energy) for just that sounds stupid. Blockchain is a nice technology but we have bad implementations like Bitcoin and others to just make money by inversions and wasting energy stupidly. Capitalism.

@blkpws are you saying that:* anything Musk says, is true,* anything that uses 3x the energy it did last year, is insane,* both. Also note, that hardly anyone in the Bitcoin community is saying that energy use is 'AOK'. But that people add perspective: is it really that much? Is it really dirty energy? Is anything that consumes energy 'bad'? Etc.

@berkes that mining uses too much energy is known already. A waste of energy... Elon Musk is mainly a troll but he said one true fact about mining. That's why ethereum is working in https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/consensus-mechanisms/pos/ you are lying yourself while people working on this tech is trying to solve this issue.

@blkpws what am I lying about to myself? And wether it is 'a waste' depend entirely on how valuable you see the service. I think neon billboards, burning energy to sell stuff, don't any value to society. (Their est. global energy intake is comparable to BTC)I therefore *deem* the energy they use, 'a waste'. But that says more about my position than that it's a universal truth.BTC is the same: it's only a waste if you don't see the value of BTC. Which is fine, BTW.

@berkes You are lying to yourself when you say the BTC value is worth to use an excessive energy for a virtual money. The value is just speculation, nothing real, only numbers raising and decreasing.

@blkpws I *never* talked about "the value" as USD-valu.But the value to society: A currency and store of value that peer to peer, owned by people (not banks), governed by its users (not governments), uncensurable, Open Source and trustless. To *me* that is worth the energy it uses. To many it is.As long as it offers banking to *one* unbanked person, or is a means to store value outside of governments to *one* oppressed person, I deem it worth the energy it uses.
