I want to know the general thoughts on signal , I've used it for years but currently I'm worried it's going closed source . What's you opinion on signal. What's alternatives do you use .

@TheFuzzStone well I know that apparently they only publish the code on the repo once a year , but there have been rumblings that their activity is becoming slower and slower regarding the opensource parts of their software . Of I'm aware that the server is proprietary. I've been considering Jitsi as a simple video option for the family .

@GreyLinux, same here.I'm also looking for an alternative for family, and close friends. I also realize that super crypto-distributed-decentralized solutions (which I really like, like RetroShare) won't work for my family or my close friends.I think for text communication self-hosted XMPP + OMEMO.But what to choose for video communication, I'm still thinking.

@GreyLinux I never liked Signal a lot, just because I don't know of any good terminal-based clients, but right now I feel like it's really going downhill, I use XMPP for my instant-messaging needs

@miro @GreyLinux lol, I still remember a Threema salesman showing up at our school approx 7 years back, they showed us threema and everything, the only reason we didnt' start using it back then was because it cost money.

@ITwrx, wut? Does it have to be enabled for audio/video calls on the server, or what?

@TheFuzzStoneOf course, it's 50/50 whether I use plain old phone or #XMPP calls. I use it from home, from the street, in the car, and over satlink from the middle of nowhere.I often get clearer calls via XMPP. 🙂

@0, Hmm, tell me please, are XMPP calls encrypted? I understand that you probably run XMPP on your own server, but still, are calls encrypted (and with what algorithm) in XMPP?

@TheFuzzStone @0 #Conversations uses DTLS-SRTP, AFAIK, for encryption of A/V calls.
