apple has the ability to single-handedly destroy just about any internet service for a lot of reasons but they basically boil down to: centralized services with just one client have to comply with Apple's content policy or else be randomly forced off the app store without warning

apple and google both pretend that decentralized services don't exist, so e.g. Masto and Matrix have to pretend to be centralized, as if each Matrix client connects to just one content network, or whatever - and get punished like that, too

this is in addition to making engineering decisions which "just happen" to exclude decentralized services, by e.g. making it impossible for a decentralized service to have decent push notifications on iOS

so Apple positions the internet as a collection of centralized services, each of which is required to have a content policy compliant with Apple's or else be removed without warning from the entire iOS platform, because unlike android you can't sideload

all of this, of course, excepts e-mail and browsers; if Chrome isn't banned from the app store because of the existence of PornHub, doing something like that to a Matrix client is simply hypocrisy - not that they care

all of that together with other factors, though, means people end up relying on centralized services like Discord and Apple has the ability to unilaterally screw both the service provider and its users. It's deeply fucked up and basically irreparable.

so yeah i'm going to continue to get angry about Apple's business decisions, and I'm going to continue to distrust them. They are the architects of internet centralization of a really insidious kind and it's fucking evil.

and more than that, i simply can't trust any Apple device or service, or any service that _relies on_ an Apple device or service, because I simply can't know when they're going to pull shit like this again

i run a personal discord server for some friends. we share nudes occasionally. that means that all my friends on iOS will _no longer be able to access that server_ and there's absolutely nothing I can do about it - because of Apple's fucked up policies.

@theotheroracle @tindall It is surprising that people would engage in such degenerate behavior and brag about it. Hopefully, soon, they'll all be rounded up and sent to camps where they can concentrate on their poor behavior.

@T045T @tindall The problem is that "apps" think they "have to be" available on both platforms. Why can't companies just make a stance and say "Fuck the app store, we don't swallow that"?If I was a Web dev, I'd love to just say "Fuck Chrome users". If Microsoft can say the same wrt. Teams calls not working in Firefox, I can 🖕 chromies too.Although I'm not a web dev. But the stuff I work on is *mainly Linux*.

@T045T @tindall Imagine if an app service so ingrained and central to the younger generations like Discord or TikTok or whatever basically went "fuck your app stores" and just released an APK. Want to be in? Use a device and ecosystem that allows you to be in!Fight the fire with the fire, the too strong centralisation would dogfood itself to hell pretty damn quickly.Keep it up for some years, and the iPhone becomes the next Blackberry.

@szalayricha @T045T it's very unlikely, in my opinion, that anyone would use an APK for, e.g., TikTok - as they rightfully shouldn't. Unfortunately the two options for most people are "Google controlled" or "totally open to malware".

@tindall @T045T We have always had downloaded MSIs and EXEs and DEBs for our software. We install device drivers from EXEs and ZIPs. An apt repository is nothing more than a glorified (and human-unreadable) index of a bunch of DEB files and some metadata. What makes APKs so different? We've been going a decade with software just being available without anyone controlling it.Malware existed beforehand, too.

@tindall @T045T I know what changed. People today start using computer too young of age, they don't burn themselves hard with Malware ridden cracked games or cheat binaries, and they don't learn how to practice safe warez, how to back data up, etc. etc. What changed is humanity becoming careless, and in terms of IT literacy, kind of incredibly stupid...I could go on a rant about video games with automatic matchmaking too, but I guess you can extrapolate that part.

@szalayricha @tindall whoof, there's a lot to unpack there, and I agree in some small ways, but not in others.I can buy that average IT literacy is going down, but IMO that's not an issue in itself - making computers accessible to folks who aren't super knowledgeable about the tech itself is a good thing! On your point re: burning yourself with warez – the stakes are so different these days! Catching malware today can ruin your IRL life much more than back then!

@szalayricha And yeah, there's a strong temptation to think that one's own generation is special (anecdotally, my parents are less savvy with computers than I am, and some people I went to uni with who are just a few years younger than me, as well). But I don't think that's a helpful stance to take, IMO it's more likely these experiences can be explained by the demographic changes I mentioned above.

@szalayricha Something like an iPad, which is really hard to permanently mess up (or even accidentally lose data, because it prods you to use Apple's backup service), is great for users who can't or don't want to invest the time to learn the details behind the scenes. The problem is that you yield some amount of control to the platform provider, and Apple has the market leverage to abuse that and instate harmful policies like Nora was saying.
