Moments ago, I was discussing with a person about whether Richard Stallman was being actually transphobic or not, because of refusing to use people's preferred pronouns (but actually respecting people's gender identity and diversity) and instead using his own weird gender-neutral pronouns (per/pers) because of the ambiguity of singular/plural they and stuff. The discussion came out of an opinion of mine regarding the open letter against RMS calling him "misogynist, ableist, and transphobic". The "transphobic" part is backed by this article:https://stallman.org/articles/genderless-pronouns.htmlHe explicitly states he's not forcing his choice of pronouns on anyone. But the question is, do you think RMS deserves being called "transphobic" only because he refuses to use people's preferred pronouns?Boosts are appreciated :boost_ok: , I'd like to know the opinion of the LGBTQIA+ community.

@avalos I think you should get better sources, stallman doesn't refuses to use people's preferred pronouns.See https://libreboot.org/news/rms.html#rms-is-not-transphobic

@avalos homie. I hate tonal words and tonal languages. I think the verb to convict someone. And the word convict. Should not share the exact same spelling. I however. Do not control the english language. I cannot erase convict from the dictionary. Even though it would make much better sense if it didn't have two very separate meanings, one being a noun and the other being a verb. I think the word read should have two different spellings for the present tense and past tense. It would make more sense. And I could start doing it. But it would be kinda stupid. Since the whole point of correct language is that you follow the rules. Why does stallman think he has the authority to invent a new pronoun for people who are using they/them just because he finds they/them confusing??? Lots and lots of things in the english language are confusing. He needs to re evaluate why he's actually doing this.

@lanodan @avalos My take on RMS will always be that I don't particularly care if he's weird. The libreboot lady makes it pretty clear here anyway that the attacks against him are just extremist ideologues doing what they do.The fact I'm trans doesn't enter into it - RMS can be trusted to not budge or sell out the idea of software freedom. I can't think of anyone else like that.In the real world, you choose your battles. Fighting to replace RMS is only going to result in someone who is a sell out being put in his place. RMS can be trusted to be RMS, and he doesn't budge on software freedom.I don't have to hang out with him to use free software.

@shebang @avalos Not budging isn't really good for activism IMO and there's the issue of his really awkward/creepy behavior for conferences and the horrible tyrant-like behavior he has with the GNU project.Like GCC doesn't have an AST dump out of paranoïa of proprietary, while this would be useful as fuck in devtools.

@tindall @syntacticsugarglider @LogicalDash @00dani @vantablack @alcinnz @Nezchan @eldaking @moonbolt @lanodan @Rusanya_Collective @scanlime Now, I want to make it clear that this was only to hear what you have to say, not to express any opinion in particular. My actual opinion is that we do have a moral obligation to use people's preferred pronouns and I will do it without exception. I didn't want to cause anger or be transphobic myself, because I'm not. I respect everyone. I'm sorry if I looked as a transphobic. Promise this won't happen again.

@tindall @syntacticsugarglider @LogicalDash @00dani @vantablack @alcinnz @Nezchan @eldaking @moonbolt @lanodan @Rusanya_Collective @scanlime I seriously, seriously apologize, I didn't intend to offend anyone, I only wanted to hear your thoughts, but it's clear it wasn't moral to even open up this topic for debate, when it's clear even to me that we have an obligation to call people using their preferred pronouns (and I do). I'm really not a bad person, seriously, I did something wrong, and I'm accepting it and apologizing. If that's not enough, what's enough then?

@lanodan @avalos That's exactly it though.RMS is willing up put up with difficulty for software freedom, something merely being useful isn't good enough an excuse for him to sell out. That's why I trust RMS, he's willing to suffer for the point. Soon as you let one thing go because it's easier, the slippery slope has already been mounted and there is only one direction to go.
