It's past time our public school systems start educating American children to fill jobs we actually need. Houses and buildings don't grow from the dirt - somebody must build 'em. Nothing wrong with working in the construction trades and it's time to make it cool again. Where Have All the Carpenters Gone?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP0egqOivKc

He is so correct.I spent my career as a general Carpenter - not for the money. There is scarcely little of it, but because I enjoyed having the knowledge and skills to build or repair, in a workmanlike manner, just about anything from foundation to roof - from framing to drywall to cabinets and trim. 1/2@Lonestar

@Lonestar Best advice I can give after 30 + years in the construction business is to become fluent in Spanish, By the way that's what happened to young people not wanting to work for illegal immigrant wages.

@Lonestar I have a remodel business and no one has skills or wants to work. My best assistant is a retired spec ops guy that I trained and we make an awesome team. This is a built in fireplace with flat screen job we just started. We are matching the siding to look like it was not added. Will be really nice when done. Weather was nice today with the pollen count off the scale

@Lonestar Maybe Mike Rowe can answer that question. He's been trying for years.

@68sawtooth I've thrown together a wood shop in my garage and don't work for anyone but myself. Our 5 year old grandson is always (getting in the way) er, helping .. and I try to encourage his interest. Sadly, carpentry doesn't hold the same attraction that video games do. I'm not surprised that kids these days are prone to do what they're doing. I suppose our challenge becomes how we reverse this alarming trend.

@LynBertrang - not surprised. the approach to *recruiting* for the trades also has to change. when learning a trade is considered as inferior to earning a college degree, it won't attract the best and brightest. becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy to so speak. for the greater good of our nation, we need smart, motivated and talented people in the trades. let's work to COMPEL our schools to get with the program.
