THREADI see my late father with new eyes all the time. He was messed up. So was I, but not nearly as badly as he was, to HIS credit.Despite myriad differences we had mutual reverence and respect for the battles each of us were fighting.Dad had a very undeveloped sense of "other". He wasn't self-aware and couldn't see himself coming through OTHER people's eyes. Dad was EXTREMELY logical when it came to systems - not people. And that cost him dearly throughout his life.Example:

Dad, two uncles and I are in a coffee shop. Dad just treated the waitress as an interrupting annoyance before ordering her about and abruptly dismissing her.Cause and effect where people were concerned was never Dad's long suit. He was oblivious to what was about to PREDICTABLY come his way. CLANG! His plate of (likely-spat-in) food arrived. The waitress was long gone before his nerves could recover."WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?!"All we could do was laugh. All of us.

There was one area where Dad was A DEPENDABLE ROCK - to anyone and everyone. If you were down in a pit, he saw it, empathized, and would STRAIGHTWAY pull you out. With superhero agility. It didn't matter who you were or how you got there. He suddenly didn't exist for himself at all in the moment. EGO-LESS - he'd forget himself and pull you out, build you back up, fortify you, and make you feel like you could take on the world again. That from a man who suffered deeply from manic depression.

Dad's depression was so bad he spent 1971 as a Thorazine-doped patient at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Menlo Park.Same hospital that inspired One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest several years later. Cuckoo's Nest was one of Dad's favorite movies because, "That is EXACTLY how it was! I was there! None of that movie was BS!"He said that the ONLY thing the movie DIDN'T portray was the level of violence that COULD come at any moment, by patients who were truly and severely mentally ill.

It was Dad's oldest brother Ralph who came to his rescue one day in the hospital lobby."My car is parked right outside, brother. All you have to do is come out there with me and get in. We'll go have Chinese food and decide what you want to do from there."Dad was ready. He got up and flew the Cuckoo's Nest, never to return.

Democrats have ALWAYS been extremely cause and effect challenged where people AND systems are concerned. They are about to experience collective depression on a scale nobody has witnessed before. It's important, I think, that I not attack. Ever.Their REAL "new normal" will be quite the adjustment for them as it is. I will go HARD on the bastards at the top, EASY on the idiots who were blinded by them. If I can pull them STRAIGHTWAY out of their pit - I WILL.I love you, Dad. END

@StevenDouglas Was thinking same thing over the weekend. Two nieces who were active trump haters, Biden cheerleaders have upended their relationship with their dad, a trump supporter. Both professionals. Their every Facebook posts contained their insane thinking. Democracy now and BLM advocacy. Took a peek Sunday on Facebook and both deleted their Facebook accounts. Could it be? I sincerely hope that all the ruined relationships can be repaired and we can all talk again regardless of politics.

@Wally45 Yes, and the best politics are NO POLITICS. Where they're concerned.Just get back to focus on positive living, where we're not all THAT divided - never were.Ignore all complex fantasy narratives that never had any bearing on reality.

@StevenDouglas Whenever I read one of your threads, I ask myself, how can I do better? You always have one amazing story after another that is so uplifting and powerful. Two of the most powerful words in assessing a psych patient are insight and judgment. You are a very strong individual with incredible insight and judgment of self. Because of that strength, you can reach out and help others in ways not many are able. I am humbled by you...and that's a good thing. Thank you.

@AngryDuey @LordByron I keep thinking about the Shock Treatment that SO many liberals went through when attending a Trump Rally. Everyone friendly, having a great time - welcoming and not judging them at all.The OPPOSITE of what would/did happen in reverse. That's how we "beat" them. If we can't beat them THEY WILL SLAUGHTER US.If they can't beat US, they can join us. Happily. In peace. That's the difference in a nutshell. It's also why WE WON.

From Dad:Black Birdie was MASSIVE schizophrenic patient - a 6 1/2 foot 350+ lbs. black guy in his mid-thirties.SOFT spoken. Very small effeminate voice, prone to startling halluicinations. One day Dad was talking to another patient when he heard/felt a WHOOOSH! behind his head. Birdie had picked up a steel table and swung it at my dad's head. Orderlies spidered screaming crying Birdie to the floor. Birdie was trying to protect my dad by knocking out the Devil Bat that flew into him.

This picture was taken at a VA hospital hours before my father died in December 2010. He was the reason I came back from China. This is a collage I made of him in 2004.

@StevenDouglasSo sorry to hear about your loss. He sounds like he was a stand-up guy. Now, on cause and effect...If you ever want a quantifiable example of how Democrats don't get cause and effect, look at "The Fight for Fifteen" and their minimum wage hikes."Poor people can't afford things. Pay them more!"Their wages go up and Cost of Goods Sold goes up."F***ING GREEDY CORPORATIONS! Poor people can't afford things again, and there are more of them!"

@MadBeachBimbo Want to hear something cool, which I think you'll understand, but many can't relate to?My siblings often talk about how badly they miss my mother and/or father. I don't miss them. EVER. For me they're not gone. They never left. They're with me everywhere I go - both of them. And I don't mean that on ANY literal metaphysical level, like, "Yes, they're watching over me." Nobody knows how any of that works. I just mean emotionally. THEY'RE RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. Always.

@2020_DJT @MadBeachBimbo That could be key, too. I didn't "miss out" on anything with either of my parents. I got it all, the good, bad and the ugly. I KNEW them both very well. Individually, from THEIR perspectives. So much so that I can still see everything through each of THEIR eyes. My other siblings were close to them, but not nearly as close as that. And what they loved they didn't feel they got enough of. So they "miss" them/that.

@StevenDouglas @MadBeachBimbo Indeed. Rather than missing them in the sense, "I wish you were here." Maybe it's more of sense of," I'm missing something from you that I didn't get the time to receive."

@StevenDouglas Interesting. I was my grandmother’s favorite but my two younger brothers were my mother’s favorites, especially the middle one. I wasn’t close to my mother but I knew her very well. My dad and I had a complicated relationship but I knew him very well. Probably because I am much like him.My brothers got mom’s love, I got grandmas love (which I didn’t want and that is worthy of a whole thread) and I was always trying to get my dad’s approval. 1/2

@StevenDouglas @MadBeachBimbo the human brain activates the motor cortex and imitates mannerisms of others we are around, we already know the brain can copy voice and image of the person. I'll take it a step further and say I think the brain can copy a person's personality. We know the mind can handle multiple personalities. So why can't we carry a portion of our loved ones' soul with us wherever we go?
