@xerz Because apparently GNOME is a pain to package on non-GNOME-sanctioned distros. There are people working on GNOME 40 support though, but AFAIK even the last GNOME upgrade took a good while.

@grainloom well, I don’t think GNOME Shell is that hard to package at all at least, it’s just a C compiler+Ninja+Meson setup, you build GTK, Mutter and GJS, and you’re pretty much there

@grainloom the rest of packages are not tied in, and Guix shouldn’t need to change the existing SCMs that much afaik

@xerz I would only ever use gnome lts if they have one. I hate it when software has to be updated.

@xj9 I both aspire to making software that doesn’t need to upgrade, and I’m a full advocate for upgrading asap while we don’t get there :blobcatgoogly:

@xerz :blobshrug: It's probably that stuff like configuration management that users would expect to work would be borked. I've seen such bug reports very recently in relation to dconf.

@grainloom oh, Gsettings schemas might break, yeahh — in which case, isn’t having multiple versions of conflicting packages to choose from a thing in Guix?
