Question: Why some cities in Canada have Japanese sounding names?I mean, Ottawa (オタワ) and Toronto (トロント) sound like they are fictional cities from some anime series.

@murtezayesil there's also "Orewa" in New Zealand, which I can't help but read it as the omnipresent "俺は" of boys' animes...

@murtezayesil The name Toronto is derived from the Mohawk word tkaronto, which means “where there are trees standing in the water.” The name Ottawa is derived from the Algonquin word “adawe”, which means “to trade”. -- internet search

@themactepCanada itself comes from Iroquoian "Kanata". Natives were directing Jacques Cartier to their nearby settlement, but Cartier took it as their word for the whole area. From there it came to mean the whole country.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada@murtezayesil

@murtezayesil many languages have this structure of open syllables, like in japanese. ancient russian had this exact structure where every consonant had to be followed by a wovel. btw, toronto would be something closer to toronoto be it a japanese name, just because of the open syllables rule.

@themactepIt was wrong for me to say "from scratch". @normandc I should have said "from canadas".
