@Godcast Something I've always pondered since I studied historiography is how accurate a view we have of the contemporary views and beliefs of the pre-christian pagans. I.e, if our views of their pantheons are coloured by what's essentially bawdy tales and shitposts which doesn't have the religious significance we attribute to it due to a lack of context.Zeus in particular I think suffers from it, since (iirc) what I remember of the homeric hymns and what cultic rites associated with the guy seem like an entirely different being from the shapeshifting rapist he's elsewhere. Then again, one of the church fathers (I forget which) did also criticize contemporary pagans for pretending to be moral when they worshipped gods they all could agree would be immoral assholes.

@Godcast @Umlauts Chesterton actually writes really well about this in The Everlasting Man (imo the only required Chesterton non-fiction reading). He really admires the old Roman paganism and says that they weren't worshipped as gods as we understand 'worship' and 'gods' now but were rather an integral part of their day to day life, kinda like you'd rub a charm for good luck but instead praying to a certain god regarding that activity. So yeah it's not like they had a Mass day or whatever, and their holidays were more feasts a ruler would throw, iirc. Pre-Christian religions were very cool imo.I mean later he argues that as ancient paganism became more and more ritualized it became more and more "fake" but thats a tangent.

@Samhydeigger @Godcast >Pre-Christian religions were very cool imo.I wouldn't even call them religions. But that's because the term religion itself is subject to a lot of academic autism because it derives from how christianity and its denominations have been defined and described.

@Umlauts @Godcast Yeah how we understand religion is incredibly derived from our experience with Christianity and to a lesser extent Islam, which is based. Kabbalah Judaism is so secretive (and evil) no one outside autists and the Jews themselves get it.

@Samhydeigger @Godcast I've read too much islamic scripture to stomach any possible implication that arabs-larping-as-jews cult is based.

@Umlauts @Godcast I didn't mean Islam is based just the fact that we derive all of our knowledge of religion by comparing it to Christianity which is based. And the early medieval understanding of Islam was that it was a Christian heresy which I lowkey kinda believe... Mohammed was likely tutored by an Arian priest iirc

@Samhydeigger @Godcast >And the early medieval understanding of Islam was that it was a Christian heresyI disagree with them only on the level that what shari'a law I've read and the various schools of interpretations it has reads exactly like Jews and how Jews twist and interpret laws to suit them. So I see it being more accurate in describe Islam as arabs larping as jews.

@Umlauts @Samhydeigger I read an article arguing that Mohammed was illiterate and that the Quran was written primarily by Jewish scribes who occasionally inserted veiled insults towards Mohammed into the text. Also explains the strong parallels between Muslim and Jewish thought. I've been looking for it again but I haven't been able to find it

@Hartmann @Samhydeigger >Jewish scribes who occasionally inserted veiled insults towards Mohammed into the text.>all the references in the Hadiths to Muhammad spilling semen all over his clothes and Aisha having to clean it up all the timeWould make sense if a jew wrote it, but arabs are plenty filthy on their own.

@Umlauts @Hartmann @Samhydeigger This is the first thing that crossed my mindDon't muslims find that part about Muhammad wearing semen-stained clothing that Aisha has to clean suspicious?
