Information available at https://e.foundationMagic Earth statement at https://doc.e.foundation/maps"Over the last ten years, mobile phone evolution has made them our daily companions, within reach at all times. But they have also quietly transformed into surveillance devices, sharing our personal data with the highest bidder or with government agencies to predict and influence our actions." -the e Foundation.

@chriswere one of my biggest pet peeves with my current android phone is not being able to uninstall the preinstalled bloatware that I never intend to use. I find it pretty disappointing that you can't uninstall the notes app; that leads me to assume there is other software that cannot be uninstalled.

@chriswereIt's hard to review a freedom packed piece of technology i guess! Yet i wonder: do i need a /e/ account before logging in or purchasing the phone ? For instance i never used any cloud service and i already have an email, so a /e/ account would only be yet another account to manage...Also what is the benefit of buying from /e/ vs buying the hw separately and installing the os on there ?

@chriswere Thanks very much for your review!! 👍 I have the same question as@lefarfadet: do I need an /e/ account to be able to use this phone? Or are there "skip sign in" options when first booting this phone? I would only want to use some apps from this phone + self-hosted data/services, I would not want to sign in to /e/.

@lefarfadet@mstdn.io @etienne@diaspodon.fr During the whole of my time with the phone, I never signed in with an 'e' account. Also, as far as I'm aware, there's no advantage to buy the phone over installing the OS yourself, other than the convenience.

@lefarfadet@mstdn.io I can confirm, there is zero requirement for an /e/ account. Think of it as a clean Android where you are free to install alsmost anything you want. I don't use much of the /e/ default market app myself. F-Droid is my favourite, and for things that I can't find on F-Droid (like banking app for example) I use Aurora Store (installed from F-Droid). After about 18 months, I would say it works very well 99% of the time. I identified sound issues that seem to be linked to a smartphone model incompatibility, but nothing too bad really.

I've always been interested in a Fairphone but sadly they don't ship them to Canada. Luckily I have similar options available although not quite as good in terms of upgradability. Hopefully other operating systems support the Fairphone 3 down the road such as Ubuntu Touch; Manjaro Arm or Postmarket OS.

@chriswere Thanks for the video about /e/OS on Fairtube. I am a user of the /e/OS for half a year. I fully agree that the /e/OS is a fully functional version of Android. I am particularly enthusiastic about the possibility to live Google free. The use of Playstore apps like Whatsapp or Facebook is unfortunately linking you intensively to the Google Playstore... So I avoid these (privacy threatening) apps.

@chriswereDid you try any apps which rely on Google Play services. I had some trouble withe the ProtonMail application last time I tried /e/.
