I'm pretty new to social media. This week I discovered what "don't @ me" means (I'm serious, I did not know).I had a very negative reaction to that practice. I wrote a rant post about it and then I deleted it.I know some people use this as a joke, but others really mean it.Can someone explain to me a valid reason for posting something in a place like this and add a "don't @ me" at the end?

@jalvarez If it's a topic that you don't want to talk about or engage with but feel the need to say something about, because the conversation is dominated by those who want to hurt you, your friends, and the collective interests thereof. For example.

@wizzwizz4 But the person reading what you posted might feel the same need to express her/his thoughts. "Don't @ me" seems to me that the person cares a lot about what she/he wanted to say and don't care at all what others have to say.

@wizzwizz4 Hahaha, I see. it is still possible to reply. Then, it is more like: "Please, auto-mute yourself from my timeline so that it is easier for me to ignore you".I understand your point about not wanting to get involved in a meaningless argument. But I'm still not fully convinced this is the best way. Anyway, thanks for your comments :)

@jalvarez Yeah, I think "dont @ me" is mainly a Twitter phenomenon since with Mastodon you can set the post visibility to "Unlisted" and that functions pretty much as a rant filter — and preferable to CW's (Content Warnings) in my opinion since CW's seem like a cry for attention (or instigation) more than anything else.Social media at it's best stimulates constructive interpersonal conversation. At it's worst, well, just don't @ me. 😄

@jalvarez You say something not that important but you aren't sure about it's accuracy. You type "don't @ me (which might refer to email in this case)" so people don't flood you with corrections. Or you write an unpopular opinion and write " don't @ me" as in you don't want to discuss this with them.

@person The first meaning sounds a bit more reasonable. However, I would prefer the large explanation instead of "don't @ me". After your explanation, it gets even more complicated because this 'meme phrase' is semantically overloaded. ಠ_ಠThanks for your comment :)
