Today I've been heavily criticised for my spare use of the internet, for not wanting to use proprietary platforms because it limits me in the things I can explore, the communities I can find. "It's like you're buliding an rpm blocker into a powerful motor" and because I like to use my computer without a mouse. would love to hear some opinions on that.

@metalune why do people take your computing habits to heart? If if makes you more efficient/happy then go for it

@renniezen he argues that it does not make me more efficient. he says that I'm limitting myself by not using i.e. discord because that's where the community is and there I could find many more hobbies and learn much more and quicker about hobbies or skills.

@metalune @renniezen it kinda makes sense, but it also doesn't. yes you're limiting your options by not using discord, but everyone has services they don't use, and communities they're not a part of. not using proprietary platforms generally just limits your interaction with normies, which of course normies are going to be annoyed byat the end of the day it's your choice who you want to interact with and on what platforms, and it's your own problem if you want to limit yourself

@spiral @renniezen he's the kind of person who use the internet as a power-learning-tool it seems. He also seems to be very focussed on progress and learning (whatever he sees as "progress")

@metalune @renniezen I think it's a good idea to use the internet to learn. progress for the sake of progress is just pointless though, if you want to use older technology (or use technology how it was used in the past) and it does everything you need, why not tbh

@spiral @renniezen I mean, yeah, I am happy with what I got, and I don't want to be always-connected nor do I want to do it part-time. I want to do it wheneveer I have to. The internet shouldn't be something you depend on for learning. It should be something that you can resort to as a last thing. I am not a master of this as of rigth now, don't get me wrong. But this is what I strive for. And, I strive for simplicity and I simply disagree with the way most people write their software/websites.

@metalune If you don't use proprietary platforms, nor a FOSS alternative, the platform was a waste of time for you, to begin with. If the platform is valuable, finding an alternative is a challenge and a learning opportunity in itself.

@cirno I mean.. whenever I switch to a FOSS alternative I usually notice that I never really needed the platform in the first place, just take odysee as an example, I can go days without even opening it once just because i forget about very easily but it really isn't a big deal to me anymore. I just enjoy the content I see here, where I can actually interact with people. every now and then i open my RSS feed reader.

@metalune @cirno Fun fact. Dischord is actually a good company even thoufh its propietary. My only worry is I heard dischord is going to be bought by microsoft. People thought about tracking in dischord. But other than google crash. It doesn't track much at all and are in close place in terms of tracking with Signal. :)

@XxAlexXx @cirno yeah I'm not against discord as a company most of the time if it wasn't for the fact that it's proprietary, because the third party clients become essentially unusable as soon as they update their protocols (which they do pretty often)

@metalune @cirno I can kind of understand. If you want all FOSS, but dischord. For what it gives, is really a good platform for gamers. And I really love it. I am against microsoft buying iit tho

@XxAlexXx @cirno I just really dislike the fact that they don't permit third party clients and don't really have an official api to interact with. because i really hate their App. but after I ditched it.. I just noticed that I don't need it because there are so many other interesting people out here that I can talk to. one door closes, another one opens.

@metalune I get that a lot also. Why not go the easy way; don't make it hard for others; why type when you can click; I don't need to know that, somebody solved it already; why do you know such things; ...I accept that sometimes you just need to get a result, and how you get it is not the primary concern. But such ignorance will eventually come back and bite you.

@fedops it's all about optimizing actions that you do very often, which is what I've done.

@metalune @cirno Ok if you hate it,you hatr it. And their app has improved a lot since I downloaded it. It almost works a lot better. And I only downloaded it for some months. Give it a second chance and see if it works. If you don't want to, you don't have to. It has developed.

@metalune it's also about building sustainable solutions that avoid vendor lockin. And building an environment that you can maintain with in-house capabilities. But nobody understands that.

@metalune I get a lot of comments from people in several topics the same way. They have objections on me being vegan, flying less, not wanting a job that sucks my life and just gives me money, avoiding big tech sw, etc, etc. For them is just about how I am "adding restrictions to my life". I try to do my best with the info that I have so I stopped caring and I am working on setting up clear boundaries when I get opinions that I did not ask for.
