       @icedquinn @chj0 saying racial slurs are not "opinions people don't like." they're used as a way to harass large groups of people. and I think we can all agree there should be some way to prevent that from happening. I just don think censoring people should be the appropriate course of action

       @miro @chj0 this idea you can classify words as not speech was an invention of judges so people could have an "out" of the absolute speech protections the constitution offers. it's not a serious line of debate and even the judge who made one of the original enabling rulings (the one "shouting 'fire' in a theatre" comes from) deeply regretted what he'd done and how it's been systematically used to circumvent the amendment.the solution to bad speech is good speech, possibly augmented by not inviting the racist to your dinner parties.

       @miro @chj0 i don’t really mind if a chat group wants to set up its own rules because private groups are not really required to uphold speech. as long as the rules are stated up front and applied consistently then have at it.it only gets complicated if you’re a platform with an obvious monopoly and you’re enforcing rules partisanly.

       @chj0 @miro i forget if anti-harassment provisions were allowed before that ruling. i want to say yes but i don't have citations.basically the old view is being obnoxious is still speech (you can't have the government prosecute them for the contents of the words) but showing up to your house constantly isn't.
