I saw them blame the ship issues on a 'power outage' Really, a power outage, when a ship is in the most critical place possible. A power outage, meaning no emergency or redundant systems. A power outage, something that could def be created with sabotage of software or hardware. I also saw them blame wind. How much does wind affect a 225,000 ton ship Apparently the Suez canal has no infrastructure to deal with this issue. Really. No plan at all? Nobody ever foresaw this?

As for the last part, I think it's just incompetency on behalf of Egypt. The rest of it stinks though.

@crisp "Apparently the Suez canal has no infrastructure to deal with this issue. Really. No plan at all? Nobody ever foresaw this?"In some searching I just did to try to confirm a claim about the identity of the ship captain, it was said this is the first time in 150 years this has happened. Another comment was normally Suez Canal pilots con the ships that go through it, as I'm sure many of us have heard about various harbors, although of course ultimately the captain is responsible.

@ThatWouldBeTelling you have to be prepared for a 1 in 100 year event like this with critical infrastructure, also the ships have been getting bigger and bigger afaik

@crisp Apparently it is due to a sandbank created by accumulation of sediment over the years which caused the ship to get stuck. Not really a one-off event, more of an inevitability

@sky999999 @crisp Dont think its a sandbank issue. Controllers at either end will never allow a large vessel like this to pass without checking draft and trim. I think they talks of refloating the ship is because the bow ate the bank and bottomed out the front.

@crisp @wikifarms @graf @s8n "[Columbus] literally didn't know where he was going and thought america was india"Less courage needed, because he based everything on a very wrong calculation of the Earth's diameter, something like half it actually is. That's why he found it so hard to get funding, because the Earth's diameter had been roughly known since Eratosthenes first did it around 240 BC to an accuracy per Wikipedia of -1% to 15%. If not for the "New World" in between Europe and "India," he and his crew would have ran out of provisions long before they got to the latter.

@crisp @graf @wikifarms Now that’s interesting, but a random ancient map is a pretty iffy thing to bet your life on vs. straightforward physics and math that made it very clear his target of India couldn’t be that landmass. And he was said to have believed on his deathbed he’d found India, contrary to all the evidence that had accumulated since his first voyage. As @s8n says, a gigachad, but still a foolish one.

@crisp Wind can have a large effect on container ships because they're so tall and long. The containers stacked on deck absorb a lot of wind load. It's not dissimilar from how tall buildings sway, just horizontal and in water.
