THREADWINTER 1976 - Lodi, CaliforniaI was with Jim, my favorite uncle, friend and mentor, who could read people and predict behavior better than anyone I ever knew.We stopped to eat and rest at a busy Burger King. At one point Jim said, "Don't look, but when this guy comes to our table, don't look at him or say anything. Eyes on me, okay?""K."A raggedy homeless guy danced up to our table from behind me. Shirtless, dancing, high as a kite.

As the Raggedy's performance began, Jim "continued" our imaginary conversation."So we'll need to take care of that by Friday. And don't worry, plenty of time for the Gilders next week. Do you think Gary might wanna..."Raggedy gave up on us and floated his performance over to another table."He's just dancing. Seems harmless enough to me, Uncle Jim.""Yeah? Good. Then he's even more harmless over there, isn't he."

A minute later a guy sitting at another table played along and applauded Crack Dancer's performance.Dancer lunged, fists rapidly pummeling the guy's face. Jim, a big solid-fat Butterbean-like fighter himself, bolted to help but two younger guys beat him to it.One of the guys got Crack Dancer in a choke hold down to the floor, where his writhing body was choked unconscious until police got there, just minutes later.

Jim returned to the table as my adrenaline was still coursing through me.Jim sat, calmly watching me for a moment before he quietly spoke."Cauliflower ears. Bruises and cuts all over his face, new and old wounds and scars all over his front, back, arms AND hands. And he's lean and ripped. Did you notice any of that?""Kind of. Not really.""He was FAR from harmless, Steven. You don't even make eye contact with someone like that. He'd kill you."Lesson learned. Start noticing things.END

@StevenDouglas Situational awareness is the most important thing you will ever learn. I taught my wife..I scope everything all the time. Violence is fast..faster if you are not prepared. I had a Situation once where the dangerous person followed me as I was leaving so I held the door for him and proceeded to best him with the door as soon as he was in position. I had no choice and am not a big person....I've been beat on long ago..never again.

@StevenDouglas Some people seem to have that gift. My mother calls it the sixth sense, people can read others like a book from just a glance.
