Perfect example of why I am not a libertarian:Usury should be banned and unconscionable outstanding loans forgiven. That includes all student loans and the national debt.

@judgedread one could make an argument that ursury is aggression and therefore against the NAP.

@judgedread Who said usury would exist in a free society?

@econengineer Why wouldn't it? Contracts are the very definition of the voluntarist society. A usurious loan can be agreed to by both parties unless the sovereign exists to forbid it.

@bungabeats But then you're doing the same thing as the SJW libertarians who claim racial discrimination violates the NAP.

@judgedread I'll admit, my response was bait. It worked. But to my actual point: What you said in response is correct. However, in a free society usury "can" exist. Doesn't mean it will exist or will be everywhere. Also trend towards going away. But if the system allows for it to be banned (via governmental violence) then usury will always exist.

@econengineer In every culture where moneylenders could operate with no cap on interest rates there has been debt slavery. Observing furniture rental stores, payday loans, loan sharks, credit card fees and interest rates since SCOTUS removed the brakes and student loan slavery it is clear that the majority cannot handle the offer of free money now in exchange for slavery / indentured servitude later. It must be forbidden, just like recreational opioid sales.

@Secftblgirl By not regulating media we ended up being ruled by psychopaths with media power. Power cannot be eliminated, evil power can only be stopped with good power. As far as selecting quality men elections and wealth have proven very weak filters.

@judgedreadOne of the interesting ideas regarding usury that one of the Catholics has pointed out (zippycatholic, RIP), is that the rate of interest is less critical than the *uncollateralized* nature of these loans. For example, with fully collateralized non-usurious loans, the borrower isn't on the hook for more than the collateral and thus is not exposed to indentured servitude / debt slavery.Basically, if there's any convoluted way in which the deal can end up with the enslavement of the borrower, it's evil and shouldn't be allowed.Ironically, the zero-trust nature of these "defi" crypto loans has necessitated that they be overcollateralized, and are thus significantly less evil in this sense.

@Countermeasures @judgedread of course if only collateralized loans are allowed....this advantages capital over labour.getting a *1,000$* line of credit as a student was like pulling teeth. It took a huge struggle to get access to that loan, and i would have paid a much higher compound interest rate if it were available to get access to the creditNow I could probably get a 200,000$ loan. And sure, I'm a better bet...but I'm also not starving anymore and near homeless. The 'makes slavery' part happens before the loan happens, and as a kind of second order consequence
